Letterio Subba (* 1787 in Messina ; † 1868 ibid) was an Italian architect, sculptor and painter of classicism in Sicily .

Life

Subba comes from a family of painters. First he studied in Naples , then in Florence and Rome . Stylistically, he joined the neoclassical movement around Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorvaldsen . He created numerous historical pictures, which thematized the liberation of Italy as a socio-political background.

His participation in the uprisings of 1848 forced him into exile in Malta . Back in Messina he was largely isolated because of his political involvement, so that he hardly received any orders.

Many of his works, such as the “Choir of Angels” in the Cathedral of Messina, were lost in the severe earthquake of 1908 .

His students include the sculptors Giuseppe Prinzi (1831–1895) and Saro Zagari (1821–1897), the painters Giacomo Conti and Michele Panebianco (1806–1873) and the engraver Tommaso Aloisio Juvarra (1809–1875).
