Michele Panebianco (born December 20, 1806 in Messina ; † April 4, 1873 ibid) was an Italian painter of classicism in Sicily .

Life

Panebianco was the son of Cosimo and Caterina De Bartolo. He was initially a student of Letterio Subba in Messina. He then attended the drawing school of the Collegio Carolino there. A scholarship from his hometown enabled him to attend the Accademia di San Luca in Rome in 1828 , where he studied with Vincenzo Camuccini and Natale Carta (1790-1884). In 1832 he returned to Messina, where he mainly worked as a copyist of images of saints. Educational trips in 1845 and 1846 took him to Naples, Milan, Genoa and Venice. There he met the neoclassical painters Francesco Hayez and Luigi Sabatelli .

In 1852 he became head of the drawing school at the University of Messina. In 1854 he undertook a study trip to Rome with some students, among them Dario Querci (1831-1918) and was appointed a member of the Congregazione dei Virtuosi del Pantheon a short time later. In 1856 he returned to Messina to resume teaching. At about the same time, his teacher Letterio Subba returned to his hometown from exile in Malta, but remained ostracized in Messina for his entire life due to his political commitment, so that Panebianco was given numerous public and church commissions instead of his work at the university.

Many of his paintings were lost in the great Messina earthquake in 1908 .
