Julius Aßfalg

Julius Aßfalg (born November 6, 1919 in Hohenaschau im Chiemgau ; † January 12, 2001 in Munich ) was professor for the science of the Christian Orient .

Life

Aßfalg studied philosophy and theology at the Freising University and the University of Eichstätt . He continued his studies, which had been interrupted by military service and imprisonment, in Munich from 1946/7. He received his doctorate in Munich in 1950 and completed his habilitation there in 1961. From 1966 he was professor for the subject 'Philology of the Christian Orient' at the University of Munich . His best known work was the Little Dictionary of the Christian Orient . Through numerous articles in reference and overview works, he worked to promote and keep alive the awareness and knowledge of the Christian Orient in oriental studies, theology and in the wider public.

He was co-editor of Oriens Christianus magazine . His main areas of research were Georgian, Armenian and Syrian literature and manuscripts. Aßfalg taught the main languages ​​of the Christian Orient, Syriac, Ethiopian, Coptic, Armenian and Georgian, as well as their literatures.
