Werner (Latin Wernherus ; † January 12, 1093 ) was the eleventh bishop of Merseburg from 1063 to 1093. He is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Werner came from an elegant noble family from Thuringia . His brother Moricho is said to have been in the service of Margrave Ekkehard II of Meißen and then of King Henry IV .

Werner was canon in St. Peters Stift in Goslar . This was founded by the Empress Agnes , who then probably appointed him in 1063 as Bishop of Merseburg. Werner is said to have been very young and initially led a dissolute life. After King Henry IV took office in 1065, he also stayed near him.

In the clashes between Saxon princes and bishops with Heinrich in 1073 Werner stood on their side, the Pope had excommunicated Heinrich. Like other bishops and nobles, Werner was imprisoned by Heinrich in 1075. At the end of June 1076 he was released again after they had sworn to remain loyal to Heinrich from now on and to support him in keeping peace in the empire, especially in Saxony. In 1085 Werner was excommunicated and deposed as a member of the opposing king Hermann von Salm as a schismatic, perjurer and rebel against the emperor. Werner was replaced by a bishop Eppo . According to the Merseburg bishop's chronicle, this expulsion was only temporary.

After the death of the anti-king Rudolf von Rheinfelden in 1080 in Werner's diocese territory, he was buried in Merseburg Cathedral .

The cleric Brun settled in Merseburg after 1080 and dedicated his chronicle of the Saxon War to Werner . In 1091 Werner consecrated the Peterskloster in Merseburg. He died on January 12, 1093.

He was considered pious and righteous , terrible to opponents and a hope to friends .
