The Argyll's Lodging is a residential building in the Scottish city of Stirling in the same council area . In 1965 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

Argyll's Lodging dates back to a 16th century tower house . Around 1630, William Alexander, 1st Earl of Stirling, acquired the property. In 1632 he had the oldest parts of Argyll's Lodging built. Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll bought the building in 1666 and had it expanded in 1674. John Campbell, 4th Duke of Argyll sold the property to the Crown in 1764, which used it as a military hospital. Today the building, which has been restored in the meantime, is used as a youth hostel.

The building stands at Castle Wynd in the historic center of Stirling. The Church of the Holy Rude , John Cowane's House , Stirling Castle and James Norrie's Lodging are in the immediate vicinity . It is one of the most significant examples of contemporary townhouse architecture in Scotland. The two- to three-story building has a U-shaped floor plan. Its Harl- plastered masonry consists of quarry stone . A heavily rusticated portal on the west side leads to the inner courtyard. There is the Doric designed main portal. Richly ornamented cornices crown the lattice windows and the pilastrated portholes . The stair towers close with conical roofs .
