Lammert Leertouwer (born January 12, 1932 in Groningen ) is a Dutch church historian and Reformed theologian.

Life

Lammert was the son of Johannes Leertouwer (born March 16, 1902 in Appelscha (municipality of Ooststellingwerf); † July 3, 1965 in Groningen) and his wife Harmina Mekel (born March 3, 1905 in Groningen; † November 25, 1979 there). He studied theology and church history at the Imperial University of Groningen . In 1958 he became an assistant at the theological faculty, worked from 1963 as a junior lecturer in theology and church history and from 1970 as a lecturer in systematic theology, church history of the unscriptural peoples and the iconography of religions. In addition, he worked from 1963 as editor of the religious radio program Kompas, from 1969 to 1973 as chairman of the board of the VPRO and later for the NOS . After he received his doctorate in theology in 1973 under Theo van Baaren (1912-1889) with the work Het beeld van de Ziel bij drie Sumatraanse volken (German: The image of the soul in three peoples of Sumatra ), he was awarded a doctorate on December 13th 1977 appointed lecturer for church history and comparative theology at the University of Leiden , which task he took over on May 1, 1979.

On December 20, 1979 he became a full professor of church history and comparative theology, which task he was given on June 13, 1980 with the introductory speech Zonder stralenkrans. Om het verklaren van religieuze verschijnselen (German: Without a halo. To explain the religious phenomena ) began. At the Leiden University he also took part in the organizational tasks. From 1984 he was dean of the theological faculty, took over the business of the rector of the alma mater on March 1, 1991 , which he remained until he left university on February 7, 1997. In addition to his academic duties, he participated from 1981 to 1996 as a broadcasting council in The Hague, became the Dutch council for libraries and information services in 1988 and was appointed officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1996 . He became a member of the International Association for the History of Religions and is a member of the Dutch Association for the History of Religions, of which he was president from 1986.

Leertouwer married on November 21, 1958 in Groningen with Elisabeth (Lies) Rahder (* April 1933 in Emmen), the daughter of Jacob Rahder (* May 20, 1900 in Noord; † April 7, 1965 in Nieuw-Amsterdam) and his Mrs. Femmigje Elisabeth Uiterwijk (born July 19, 1901 in Hoogeveen; † April 21, 1970 ibid). The violinists Johannes Leertouwer (* December 5, 1959 in Groningen), Jaap Leertouwer (* 1962 in Groningen) and Joost Leertouwer (* July 1964 in Groningen) are known from his children.
