Albrecht I of Hohenfels

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Albrecht I von Hohenfels († January 12, 1355, probably in Nuremberg ) was Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt from 1344 to 1353 .

origin

Albrecht I von Hohenfels came from the Bavarian noble family von Hohenfels . They were ministerials of the bishops of Regensburg . The headquarters that gave it its name was Hohenfels Castle , today located in the Neumarkt district in the Upper Palatinate .

Life

Albrecht I has been in high ecclesiastical offices in Eichstätt since 1322 . From 1342 he also took over offices in Regensburg , including the Regensburg canon .

He was elected unanimously by the cathedral chapter in 1344 and received confirmation from the Mainz Metropolitan Heinrich III. from Virneburg . Heinrich, however, was himself excommunicated as a partisan of Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria . Apparently he was permanently denied the support of the Pope, because he always registered as an Elect .

With the appointment of Berthold von Zollern as the new Eichstätt bishop in 1351, the cathedral chapter increased the pressure on the bishop, who, through the mediation of Burgrave Johann II , Berthold's brother, brought about a solution: Albrecht I renounced his rights as bishop and became subordinate settled with an annual pension and three castles. He died in 1355 and was buried in the Willibald Choir of Eichstätter Cathedral . His grave slab has not been preserved.
