Engelhard von Dolling

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Engelhard von Dolling , also Tolling (en) , († May 4, 1261 in Mainz ) was Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt from 1259 to 1261.

Life

Engelhard came from the von Dolling family (see also list of Bavarian noble families ), a noble family. The family name exists in numerous name variants, e.g. B. also Tullinga or Tollenggen . It is named after Oberdolling , today a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Eichstätt . Engelhard von Dolling is first attested as Eichstätter canon since 1230 . Canon Reinboto de Tollenggen , documented from 1231, is regarded as his brother. As bishop he asserted honorary privileges over claims from Mainz . He laid the foundation for the Willibald Choir of Eichstätter Cathedral .

The Mainz bishop Werner von Eppstein was commissioned by Pope Alexander IV to hold a provincial synod, which was primarily to deal with the rapidly expanding Mongol Empire and the dangers it posed. At the beginning of May 1261 the synod finally took place in Mainz . Engelhard von Dolling died during the synod. By evaluating a necrology of unknown origin, it is now assumed that the bishop was first buried in Mainz Cathedral and only later transferred to Eichstätt.
