Johann Gottfried Arndt

Johann Gottfried Arndt (born January 12, 1713 in Halle , † September 1, 1767 in Riga ) was a Livonian historian .

Life

Johann Gottfried Arndt grew up in the orphanage of his hometown and completed his school days there. He later studied at the University of Halle . He then went to Livonia as a tutor in 1738 .

In 1740 Arndt was appointed rector of the school in Arensburg on Ösel . With his appointment as Vice Rector of the Imperial Lyceum in Riga in 1747, Arndt began his writing activities. He published, among other things, essays for the scholarly contributions to the Riga advertisements .

Arndt's Livonian Chronicle , parts of which were published in Halle, were important. As part 1, Livonia appeared under its first bishops in 1747 and part 2 dealt with Livonia under its masters in 1753 . Furthermore, the list of castles compiled by Arndt and published in 1753 contributes to the exploration of castles in Latvia.
