Ernst comes from the Old High German seriously “argument, fight” and accordingly means “the determined”, then also “the serious”, one of the few single-stemmed German names. Ernestus is also available as a Latinized version , with the variant Ernestinus .

From the late 19th century to the 1910s, the name Ernst was often one of the ten most common boy names of the year. Its popularity began to decline rapidly in the 1950s, and has been barely in use since the late 1960s.
