Ernst Hoffmann (anatomist)

Carl Ernst Emil Hoffmann (born April 26, 1827 in Darmstadt , † December 15, 1877 in Basel ; also Karl Ernst Emil Hoffmann ) was a German doctor , anatomist , physiologist and university professor .

Life

Hoffmann studied natural sciences at the universities of Giessen and Jena and passed the state examination as a pharmacist in January 1850 . Then he attended, because he was dissatisfied with his job, the high school in Darmstadt, then studied medicine at the universities of Gießen and Würzburg . After he had already passed the state examination in medicine in 1856, he settled in Gießen as a general practitioner, but at the same time worked on his habilitation and became a prosector at the university , which roughly corresponds to the position of a scientific assistant .

In 1863 Hoffmann accepted a position as a lecturer and prosector at the University of Basel , where he was first associate professor in 1864 , then in 1872 full professor of anatomy and head of the Institute of Pathology in Basel. In 1874 he was given the position of dean and in 1876 that of rector of the University of Basel. He was also entrusted with the post of university archivist and also president of the Medical Society.

In 1877 he died unexpectedly at the section table .
