Ernst von Bergmann (born February 4, 1844 in Vienna , † April 26, 1892 in Vienna) was an Austrian Egyptologist .

Life

Ernst von Bergmann, son of the employee of the kk Münz- und Antikenkabinett Joseph von Bergmann , studied Egyptology and Arabic philology in Vienna with Leo Reinisch (doctorate in 1867) and in Göttingen in 1868/69 with Heinrich Brugsch and Ewald. He had been working for the Coin and Antiquities Cabinet since 1862, and for the Egyptian-Oriental collection , of which he became director, since 1867 . The Egyptian collection had been in the Lower Belvedere since 1863, and in the newly established Art History Museum since 1891 . In 1877/78 he made a trip to Egypt. From 1880 he was a corresponding member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences .

He is buried in the romantic cemetery in Maria Enzersdorf .
