Railway accident in Sant Andreu de la Barca
In the railway accident at Sant Andreu de la Barca on February 28, 1977, two trains of the suburban traffic from Barcelona of Ferrocarriles de Cataluña, SA (FFCC) collided at the Sant Andreu de la Barca train station , Catalonia . 22 people died.
Starting position
One train was traveling from Matorell to Barcelona on the single-track , electrified line , the other in the opposite direction from Barcelona to Igualada . The trains were occupied by about 300 passengers . Many of them were workers at a Seat auto factory, driving home from the morning shift.
the accident
At the exit of the Sant Andreu de la Barca train station, the engine driver of the train heading for Barcelona overlooked the exit signal showing “stop” and ran over it. This led to the fact that the traction current was automatically switched off, but not to an emergency brake . The two trains collided 100 meters away. One of the locomotives was thrown by the force of the impact onto a parallel street.
consequences
22 people died, including both train drivers. At least 85 others were injured.
