The Egyptian and Near Eastern collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna , with around 17,000 objects one of the great collections of Egyptian art in the world.

history

The collection goes back to the imperial art collection of the Habsburgs . The earliest object acquired is the statue of Gemnefharbak, acquired in the 16th century for Emperor Ferdinand I in Constantinople . In the second half of the 18th century the kk Münz- und Antikenkabinett was founded, the department of which formed the Egyptian collection. In 1821 around 4,000 objects were acquired in Egypt. The Egyptian collection was on public display from 1823 to 1863 in the so-called Harrach House, Palais Corbelli-Schoeller , Johannesgasse 7, and since 1863 in the Lower Belvedere . It has been located in the newly constructed building of the Kunsthistorisches Museum since 1891 . A further significant expansion was achieved through finds from the excavations of Hermann Junker in the necropolis of Giza .
