Giza Necropolis
The necropolis of Giza is next to Saqqara and Thebes the most important burial place of ancient Egypt . The first burials took place here between the 1st and 3rd dynasties . It became very important during the 4th dynasty when the pharaohs Cheops , Chephren and Mykerinos chose Giza as the location for their pyramids . In addition to the pharaohs, their family members as well as officials and priests were also buried here. Several hundred graves were built here by the end of the Old Kingdom in the 6th Dynasty . After that, Giza lost its importance, but was used again as a burial place during the later period in the course of a general return to the Egyptian past.
