Said Wilbert Musa (born March 19, 1944 in San Ignacio ) was Prime Minister of Belize between 1998 and 2008 .

Life

Musa was born in San Ignacio as the fourth son of Hamid and Aurora Musa. These have Palestinian roots. He went to Saint Andrew's Primary School in San Ignacio and then to high school at St. Michael's College in Belize City . He later attended St. John's College Sixth Form . He then studied law at the University of Manchester in Great Britain . In 1966 he completed his studies with an honors degree . The following year he returned to Belize, where he worked first as a prosecutor and later as a private lawyer.

Musa joined the People's United Party (PUP) under George Cadle Price and was elected to the first independent National Assembly of Belize in 1981 . He served as Advocate General and Minister for Economic Development between 1981 and 1984, and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Education between 1989 and 1993. In the first years after independence he was also a member of the committee that drafted the Belize Constitution and of the delegation that dealt with the final definition of the borders between Belize and Guatemala . In 1996, Musa took over the party leadership of the PUP and led it to election victories in the parliamentary elections in 1998 and 2003.
