Dean Oliver Barrow (born March 2, 1951 ) is a Belizean lawyer and politician. He has been Prime Minister of Belize since February 2008 .

Life

Barrow began his political career in 1983 when he ran for Belize City Council and won the election. In the 1984 general election he was able to beat Ralph Fonseca and then became Foreign Minister and Attorney General . From 1993 to 1998 Barrow was again the country's foreign minister . He then became chairman of the United Democratic Party and thus opposition leader in 1998 - when his party's electoral defeat only three seats in parliament could be achieved that year.

In the parliamentary elections on February 7, 2008 , UDP achieved a landslide victory, with 25 out of 31 seats. Barrow was sworn in as Prime Minister on February 8, 2008. He was the first colored Prime Minister of the small country. His cabinet, in which he worked as finance minister in personal union, was installed on February 11th.

UDP also won the 2012 and 2015 elections , albeit with a much smaller margin. This allowed Barrow two more terms as prime minister.

family

Dean Barrow's son is the well-known rapper Shyne , who was born Jamal Barrow in 1978.
