Karlhans Abel

Karlhans Paul Abel (born December 31, 1919 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ; † April 27, 1998 ibid) was a German classical philologist who taught at the University of Marburg from 1957 to 1985.

Life

Karlhans Abel, the son of a businessman, began studying classical philology and English at the Berlin University in the winter semester of 1939/1940 . In the first trimester of the war in 1940 he moved to the University of Cologne . During the Second World War , Abel's studies were interrupted by five years of military service and imprisonment. In the winter semester of 1947/1948 he resumed his studies in Cologne. In 1953 he moved to Frankfurt , where he in 1955 when Hermann Langerbeck with the dissertation The Plautusprologe doctorate was.

After receiving his doctorate, Abel worked for two years at the Institute for the History of Medicine in Freiburg . During this time he found a lifelong research focus in ancient science and medicine. In 1957 Abel moved to Marburg, where he worked as a lecturer at the theological faculty at Philipps University . After his habilitation (1966), Abel moved to the Marburg Seminar for Classical Philology as a private lecturer, where he was appointed professor in 1971. In 1985 he retired. A year later he and his sister Gertrud Abel founded the Karl and Gertrud Abel Foundation to promote research in the field of ancient philosophy.

Services

Abel's research focus was the philosopher Seneca . In his habilitation thesis Bauformen in Senecas Dialogogen (Heidelberg 1967) Abel dealt with structural problems in Seneca's philosophical writings. He gave an overall presentation of his Seneca research in 1985 under the title Seneca: Life and Performance ( Rise and Decline of the Roman World [ANRW] II, 32, 2, pp. 653-775).

Another focus of Abel's research was ancient science and medicine. In his essay The Doctrine of Blood Circulation in the Corpus Hippocraticum ( Hermes . Volume 86, 1958, pp. 192-219), he demonstrated that ancient medicine did not know about blood circulation. For the revision of Paulys Realencyclopadie der classical antiquity and for the little Pauly he provided numerous geographical articles, as well as a monograph entitled Zone: The Problem of the Biosphere in Geographical Thought of Antiquity (Munich 1974).
