- Irving / United States : The oil companies Exxon and Mobil Oil sign an agreement to merge the two companies.
- Tokyo / Japan : Real Madrid from Spain wins the game for the soccer world cup for club teams with 2: 1 against CR Vasco da Gama from Brazil .
Thursday 3rd December 1998
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : A few weeks before the onset of the third stage of European Economic and Monetary Union , with which the real exchange rate of the new currency euro are set to the currencies of eleven countries that reduce central banks of the eleven countries their key interest rates . Bundesbank President Hans Tietmeyer comments on the campaign as a “vote of confidence in the euro”. The European Central Bank will be responsible for the euro and the Bundesbank will lose its importance.

- Vienna / Austria : The law on the return of works of art from the Austrian Federal Museums and Collections, or Art Restitution Act for short , comes into force. It regulates the handling of works that were confiscated or illegally sold during the National Socialist era .

- Fort Lauderdale / United States : The club DC United from the US capital Washington wins against CR Vasco da Gama from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil with a 2-0 victory in the second leg, the last game of the Copa Interamericana in football .
Sunday December 6, 1998
- Caracas / Venezuela : Hugo Chávez of the Movement for a Fifth Republic wins the presidential election with an anti-corruption and anti-poverty campaign that garnered him 56% of the vote. He promises the implementation of a Bolivarian Revolution as a necessary step on the way to socialism in the 21st century .
- Libreville / Gabon : Omar Bongo becomes president again after democratic elections . He came to power in 1967 and has been in office since then.
- Orbit : Astronauts on the space shuttle Endeavor of the space agency NASA connect the first two parts of the international space station on the STS-88 mission .

- Berlin / Germany : The first meeting of the alliance for work, training and competitiveness initiated by the new Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder ( SPD ) to reduce unemployment and to reform social security takes place. For the year 1998 the average number of unemployed is estimated at 4.28 million people.

- Brussels / Belgium : The Foreign Minister of the United States , the NATO state party with the greatest military clout, Madeleine Albright, comments on the thoughts of the German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer on reducing nuclear weapons to the effect that they will examine the advantages and disadvantages considers nuclear weapons unnecessary.
- Chlef / Algeria : In the civil war , armed radical Islamist fighters kill 81 villagers in the area around the city of Tadjena and take 20 women prisoners.

He guarantees u. a. the right to life and personal freedom. The interpretation of these rights is subject to the sovereignty of the individual states.
- Sofia / Bulgaria : The death penalty is removed from national law.

- Surat Thani / Thailand : An aircraft of the type Airbus A310 of the airline Thai Airways collapsed during the landing approach about 4 km before the airport , and exploded. 101 inmates die, 45 can be saved.

- Jerusalem / Israel : Parliament decides to dissolve itself and hold new elections early in the first half of next year. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of the party merger failed previously in coalition talks with the Labor Party . The focus of the negotiations was the Wye Agreement on the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the West Bank .

- Pristina / Yugoslavia : After increased assaults of both parties to the conflict in the war in Kosovo in Serbian or Kosovar civilians explaining armed fighters of the Kosovo Albanian KLA the ceasefire canceled. The peace efforts of the United States Special Envoy Richard Holbrooke are considered to have failed due to non-compliance with the ceasefire.

- Pailin / Cambodia : Khieu Samphan , head of state from 1976 to 1979, and Nuon Chea , brother of the Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot , write a message to the Cambodian government at their retreat on the border with Thailand , in which they agree to a legal agreement Prepare to come to terms with the genocide in Cambodia and other crimes during the country's socialist government.

- Phnom Penh / Cambodia : 72-year-old Nuon Chea and 67-year-old Khieu Samphan , two leaders of the Khmer Rouge , apologize to their compatriots for the genocide in Cambodia . Beginning in the 1970s, the leadership of the Khmer Rouge ordered the murder of 1.4 to 2.2 million people. Chea and Samphan are staying in Phnom Penh by invitation and are hoping for reprieve or mitigation .
