Tuesday September 1, 1998
- France : A mass trial of 138 Algerians who French leaders see as racially motivated begins. The defendants are charged with assisting Islamist terrorists in bomb attacks in 1995 and 1996.
- Moscow / Russia : President Boris Yeltsin receives US President Bill Clinton on a state visit. American media describe Russia as a "country without a functioning government ". During the current Russian financial crisis , millions of workers are waiting for their outstanding wages .

- Brussels / Belgium : The trial of the former Belgian minister and NATO Secretary General Willy Claes and other politicians involved in the Agusta affair opens. The charge is of corruption in connection with helicopter gunship orders for the Belgian armed forces .
Thursday September 3, 1998
- Peggy's Cove / Canada : On the way from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to Geneva , Swissair flight 111 crashes into the Atlantic at 10:31 p.m. local time due to a cable fire in the on-board electronics . All 229 inmates are killed.
Friday 4th September 1998
- Berlin / Germany : The ring accelerator Bessy II at the science and business location Adlershof is inaugurated. In the future, electrons will be accelerated to a high-energy level in the system and introduced into the storage ring , where they will be used to calibrate light sources and detectors.
- Erfurt / Germany : The children's channel broadcasts the first episode of Schloss Einstein , the first children's soap opera on German television.
- Menlo Park / United States : Larry Page and Sergey Brin found the company Google Inc. in a garage to implement their concept of a search engine for the World Wide Web . The Google search engine , a further development of its "Backrub" search engine, is due to go online in the next few weeks .
Saturday 5th September 1998
- Novaya Zemlya / Russia : In the event of a hostage situation, four navy soldiers bring seven teachers and seventeen students under their control. The deed comes to a bloodless end.
- Pyongyang / North Korea : The Supreme People's Assembly elects Kim Jong-il , son of the dictator Kim Il-sung , who died in 1994 , as head of the National Defense Commission . Kim Il-sung is named "Eternal President" of North Korea.
- Salzburg / Austria : The foreign ministers of the 15 member states of the European Union (EU) meet in Salzburg. In recent months, some foreign ministers, like the Dutchman Hans van Mierlo , complained that the Council for General Affairs and External Relations , in which the foreign ministers meet, is being increasingly marginalized by the Council for Economic and Financial Affairs , which is the EU's economic and finance ministers - forming states.
- Szczecin / Poland : The countries Denmark , Germany and Poland sign a resolution on the formation of a multinational NATO corps with the name " Korps Nordost ". In return, the German-Danish headquarters of the Allied Land Forces Schleswig-Holstein and Jutland are to be dissolved.
- Valletta / Malta : In the early parliamentary elections , the Nationalist Party receives an absolute majority. Leading candidate Edward Fenech Adami announced plans to bring the country closer to the European Union (EU). Malta was the only country to date to withdraw an application to join the EU.

- Toronto / Canada : The Canadian women's national soccer team wins the final of the CONCACAF Women's Championship in Etobicoke 1-0 against Mexico .
Monday September 7, 1998
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : Berti Vogts announces his resignation as head coach of the German men's national football team in order to enable the selection to start again.
Tuesday September 8, 1998
- Bonn / Germany : Indian President K. R. Narayanan meets Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl during a state visit .
- Bonn / Germany : The Federal Minister of the Interior Manfred Kanther announces that the former terrorist Hans-Joachim Klein has been arrested.
- Brussels / Belgium : The European Union bans the Yugoslav airline JAT from taking off and landing. A planned deportation of 60 Kosovo - Albanians from North Rhine-Westphalia to Yugoslavia becomes impossible and the detainees be released into the wild.

- Istanbul / Turkey : The FIFA World Cup will play against the “Turkey Allstars” at the İnönü Stadı . The occasion of the meeting is the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey or the Turkish Football Association . The match ends 4: 4.
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : Erich Ribbeck will succeed Berti Vogts as coach of the men's selection team of the German Football Association .
- Washington, DC / United States : US Attorney General Janet Reno opens preliminary investigation against US President Bill Clinton . The reason is the accusation that Clinton used public funds for his own election campaign.

- Macedonia : A force of NATO soldiers is moving to Macedonia, the former Republic of the SFR Yugoslavia , for a week-long maneuver .
Friday 11th September 1998
- Kuala Lumpur / Malaysia : The 16th Commonwealth Games begin in the Malaysian capital , the first on Asian soil. By September 21, 3,638 athletes from 69 countries will take part in 215 competitions in 15 sports.
- Moscow / Russia : The Duma elects the former Foreign Minister Yevgeny Maximowitsch Primakow as the new Prime Minister of Russia . The decision will only be made in the third ballot, after the respective candidates did not receive a majority in the two previous ballots.

- Sarajevo / Bosnia-Herzegovina : In the elections to parliament and the collective state presidency, the Bosnian Alija Izetbegović , the Croat Ante Jelavić and the Serb Zivko Radišić are elected heads of state of the former Yugoslav republic with equal rights .
- Tirana / Albania : The politician Azem Hajdari from the Democratic Party of Albania is shot on the street and later dies of his injuries. His death sparked bloody protests across the country.

- Los Angeles / United States : In the Shrine Auditorium , the Emmy television award is presented for the 50th time , one of the awards goes to the Practice series .
- Munich / Germany : In the state elections in Bavaria , the CSU is again the strongest force in the Free State with 52.9% of the vote. Compared to 1994 it has increased slightly, the SPD and the Greens remain stable at 28.7% and 5.7%. All other parties clearly miss the five percent hurdle .
- New York / United States : The Australian tennis player Patrick Rafter wins as defending champion at the US Open 1998 the final in the men's singles against his compatriot Mark Philippoussis in four sets.
- Venice / Italy : At the end of the 55th Venice International Film Festival , the winners will be awarded. The Golden Lion goes to the film So We Laughed by Italian director Gianni Amelio .

- Baghdad / Iraq : Iraq announces that it intends to terminate its cooperation with the weapons inspectors of the United Nations .

- Belgium , Netherlands : In the countries on the North Sea , heavy rains lead to floods. Numerous people are evacuated, and disaster alarms are triggered in some regions.
- Berlin , Hannover / Germany : The Railway - Hanover-Berlin high-speed railway will be opened. Operations are scheduled to begin on September 20th.

- Saint-Hyacinthe / Canada : The breeding bull Hanoverhill Starbuck dies. Its semen was of particularly high quality, which makes it the biological ancestor of most of the Holstein cattle living in Canada and Europe .

- Stuttgart / Germany : The shareholders of Daimler-Benz AG approve the plans to merge with the US Chrysler group.

- Germany , Vietnam : The investment protection treaty between the two countries comes into force.
- Hagen / Germany : The rock band Extrabreit gives their farewell concert in their hometown.
- Rostock / Germany : The NPD holds an election rally, with around 3,500 supporters of the right-wing extremist party marching through the Hanseatic city. At the same time there is a peace festival at which a large number of counter-demonstrators protested. A good 6,000 police officers are on duty. Feared riots did not materialize, 127 arrests were made.

- Berlin / Germany : The Brazilian Ronaldo da Costa sets a new world record in the marathon . In the Berlin Marathon , he completed the 42.195 km in 2 hours 6 minutes 5 seconds, undercutting Belayneh Dinsamo's best from 1988 by 45 seconds. Da Costa is the first marathon world record holder from South America since the introduction of official statistics 90 years earlier.
- Poland : Former Polish President Lech Wałęsa is elected chairman of the newly founded party “Christian Democracy of the Third Polish Republic”.
- Stockholm / Sweden : In the election to the Reichstag , the Labor Party (SAP) remains the strongest force, but has lost almost 9% of the vote compared to the 1994 election . The government headed by SAP Prime Minister Göran Persson , previously supported by the Left Party , needs another cooperation partner. The Greens are ready to negotiate.

- United States : Several broadcasters broadcast a roughly four-hour televised recording of US President Bill Clinton's questioning about his intimate relationship with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky by a grand jury in August.

- Maseru / Lesotho : South African troops march into the enclave to overthrow the neighboring country's government.
- Washington, DC / United States : As part of a state visit, the Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi at US President Bill Clinton as a guest.

- Brisbane / Australia : The fourth Soccer Oceania Championship begins, in Brisbane all matches will be played until October 4th.
Saturday 26th September 1998
- Bratislava / Slovakia : In the parliamentary elections , the HZDS under Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar will again be the strongest force, but will have to accept heavy losses. The newly founded SDK is almost the second strongest party.
- Brussels / Belgium : The Belgian Interior Minister Louis Tobback announces his resignation after only five months in office. He draws conclusions from the death of the expelled Nigerian asylum seeker Semira Adamu , which led to violent protests.

- Bern / Switzerland : The referendum on the federal law on a performance-based heavy vehicle charge is supported by 57.2% of the electorate. After the implementation of the new regulations, heavy transports will have to pay tolls on all roads in Switzerland.
- Bonn / Germany : The SPD under Chancellor candidate Gerhard Schröder becomes the strongest force in the Bundestag election with 40.9% of the votes and wins 298 of 669 seats in the Bundestag . The CDU and CSU together have 35.1% and, with 245 members, are only the second largest group in parliament. The still incumbent Chancellor Helmut Kohl announces his resignation from the office of Federal Chairman of the CDU . Furthermore, Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen (6.7%, 47 seats), the FDP (6.2%, 43 seats) and the PDS (5.1%, 36 seats) move into the Bundestag, the latter by exceeding the 5% hurdle for the first time as a parliamentary group.
- Hamburg / Germany : Two initiatives to facilitate referendums in Hamburg are up for vote. One is successful, the other narrowly fails.
- Kiel / Germany : According to a referendum in Schleswig-Holstein , the introduction of the new German spelling is to be reversed. 56.4% vote against the spelling reform .
- Schwerin / Germany : In the state elections , the SPD under top candidate Harald Ringstorff becomes the strongest force in the state parliament for the first time with 34.3% of the vote . The CDU has to accept significant losses, it comes to 30.2%, otherwise only the PDS succeeds in entering parliament with 24.4%. Of the 71 seats, 27 go to the SPD, 24 to the CDU and 20 to the PDS. The result later leads to the first red-red state government in Germany.

- Bonn / Germany : Representatives of the SPD and Bündnis 90 / The Greens speak out in favor of a joint federal government. The first red-green coalition has a majority of 21 seats in the Bundestag.
- Germany , Austria : ICE traffic between Germany and Vienna resumed almost four months after the train accident near Eschede .
- Munich / Germany : Federal Finance Minister Theo Waigel announces that he will not run again for the chairmanship of the CSU .
- Pristina / Yugoslavia : Zoran Andjelković becomes chairman of the Provisional Executive Council in Kosovo after it was overturned for eight years.
- Zurich / Switzerland : The television station SRF Zwei starts the program window for the Swiss offshoot of the American children's TV station Nickelodeon . Nickelodeon Germany was discontinued just under four months ago.

- Munich / Germany : The Bavarian State Parliament elects Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber ( CSU ) , who has been in office since May 1993, for the third time as Head of Government.
Wednesday September 30, 1998
- Lisbon / Portugal : The world exhibition Expo 98 ends.
- Paris / France : Gerhard Schröder arrives in the French capital on his first trip abroad since he and the SPD won the federal election .
