tourism

Peggy's Cove is one of the main tourist attractions in Nova Scotia and is the main attraction of the Lighthouse Trail . The town's famous lighthouse marks the eastern part of St. Margaret's Bay.

Tourism has been the town's main source of income since the Second World War . Despite the dominance of tourism, the village has not lost its rustic charm of a fishing village. Its inhabitants still fish for lobsters today . In order to preserve the originality of the place, the local administration and the provincial government have issued strict rules for the development and the influx of new residents.

Peggy's Cove has a classic red and white lighthouse, the Peggy's Point lighthouse , which is no longer in active service with the Canadian Coast Guard . The lighthouse is one of the most photographed buildings on the Atlantic side of Canada and one of the most noticeable lighthouses in the world. At the lighthouse was a small office of the Canadian Post Office , where visitors could send postcards with a special stamp.

Swissair flight 111

One of the memorials to the plane crash on Swissair flight 111 is located about 1 km northwest of the village, called The Whalesback . On September 2, 1998 at around 10:00 p.m. local time, the McDonnell Douglas of Swissair crashed into the Atlantic about 10 km from Peggy's Cove en route from New York to Geneva. All 215 passengers and 14 crew members were killed in the accident. A second memorial is located in Bayswater , on the opposite side of the bay.
