Semira Adamu
Semira Adamu (born April 15, 1978 in Kaduna , † September 22, 1998 in Brussels ) was an asylum seeker from Nigeria who was suffocated with a pillow by two Belgian police officers during a deportation . She fled Nigeria from a forced marriage . On December 12, 2003, four police officers were found guilty of the incident. The Belgian state was ordered by the court to pay compensation to Adamus relatives. Adamus death sparked a major debate in Belgium and resulted in the Etienne Vermeersch report on deportation practice. After a wave of public protests, the Belgian Interior Minister Louis Tobback resigned in September 1998.
