Etienne Vermeersch

Etienne Vermeersch (born May 2, 1934 in Brugge - Sint-Michiels , † January 18, 2019 in Gent ) was a Belgian philosopher . He gained notoriety for his contributions on the subject of atheism .

Life

Vermeersch earned an MA in Classical Philology and Philosophy and a PhD in 1965 from the University of Ghent . As a professor he taught theory of science and philosophical anthropology there . Vermeersch initially belonged to the Jesuits . However, over time, he saw the contradictions of Christianity and became an atheist. As a skeptic , he was one of the founders of SKEPP . He was considered one of the most influential intellectuals in Flanders .

In 2016 an asteroid was named after him: (14439) Evermeersch .
