- New York , Washington, DC / United States : The United Nations Security Council calls on Serbian President of Yugoslavia Slobodan Milošević to protect all civilians of all ethnicities . The United States government has announced "military strikes " soon in the event of further Serb attacks on Kosovar Albanians .
Friday October 2, 1998
- Moscow / Russia : In a conversation with the Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi , the Prime Minister of Russia Yevgeny Primakov affirmed that a military intervention in the Kosovo conflict should only be possible with a mandate from the United Nations Security Council . The possibility of the Security Council granting such a mandate can be ruled out because Russia would then have to vote for the mandate in the Council.
Saturday 3rd October 1998
- Kailua-Kona / United States : Natascha Badmann from Switzerland wins the women’s competition in the Ironman Hawaii triathlon competition , making her the first European female winner in the history of this event. In the men's rankings, in which Thomas Hellriegel was the first time a European came out on top last year , this time a North American wins with the Canadian Peter Reid .
- Riga / Latvia : In the third parliamentary election after independence was restored in 1990 , the People's Party received the most votes with 21.2%. 18.1% of voters vote for the Latvian Way party . The previous government, led by the Tēvzemei un Brīvībai / LNNK party, has been voted out of office.

- Stockholm / Sweden : The Foundation of the Right Livelihood Award chooses the Croatian anti-war campaign around Katarina Kruhonja and Vesna Teršelič , the British environmental medicine specialist Samuel Epstein , the International Action Network for Baby Food and the support group of the indigenous people in the Chilean Bío-Bío region .

- Oslo / Norway : The new area for passenger aviation at the previous Gardermoen military airfield is opened. Architecture and technology are state-of-the-art in a European comparison.
- Stockholm / Sweden : The Portuguese José Saramago receives the Nobel Prize for Literature this year . One of his most famous works is The Stone Raft .

- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : The author of the novel A Fleeing Horse Martin Walser from Germany receives the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade .
Monday October 12, 1998
- Stockholm / Sweden : This year the Americans Robert Francis Furchgott , Louis J. Ignarro and Ferid Murad will receive the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their research into the cardiovascular system .
Tuesday October 13, 1998
- Stockholm / Sweden : The American citizen Walter Kohn, born in Vienna in 1923, and the Briton John Anthony Pople will receive the Nobel Prize in Chemistry this year . The foundation honors her work in molecular research . The Nobel Prize in Physics this year will be at the American Robert B. Laughlin , the Sino americans Daniel Chee Tsui and the German Horst Ludwig Störmer for their work in the field of quantum fluids awarded.

- Stockholm / Sweden : The Indian Amartya Sen will receive the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics this year for his contributions to welfare economics .
- Vaduz / Liechtenstein : More than 16 years after their first international match Liechtensteinische finished Football - National Team of Men a game with a victory. The competitive game against the selection of Azerbaijan in the qualification phase for the European Football Championship 2000 won the team of coach Ralf Loose with 2: 1.

- Germany , Venezuela : The investment protection treaty between the two countries comes into force.
- Oslo / Norway : The Northern Irish John Hume and David Trimble will receive this year's Nobel Peace Prize . The committee wants to recognize the politicians for their efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Northern Ireland conflict.

- Bishkek / Kyrgyzstan : In the constitutional referendum, voters will vote for the proposed land reform . It allows individuals the first time the acquisition of basic and floor . With the acceptance of the referendum, the Kyrgyz President also receives an even larger share of state power .
- Darmstadt / Germany : The German Academy for Language and Poetry awards the Georg Büchner Prize to the Austrian Elfriede Jelinek .
- Texas / United States : The Central Texas Flood claims the first deaths.
Sunday October 18, 1998
- Pristina / Yugoslavia : The first 15 OSCE observers arrive in the capital of the province of Kosovo . They should check whether some of the Serbian police and military forces withdraw from Kosovo as requested by the United Nations Security Council . The NATO announced air strikes on Serbia if it does not reduce its military presence in Kosovo.
- Texas / United States : The number of people killed during the Central Texas Flood rises to at least 30.
Tuesday October 20, 1998
- Bonn / Germany : The parliamentary groups of the SPD and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in the Bundestag conclude a coalition agreement and thus seal the first red-green federal government . According to the agreement, Gerhard Schröder (SPD) will be the new Federal Chancellor and Joseph Fischer (Greens) Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs and Vice-Chancellor.

- Bucharest / Romania : The south-eastern European country and France sign an agreement on military cooperation. The French Foreign Minister Alain Richard assures his hosts of his country's support for Romania's entry into NATO .

- Bergen / Norway : The TV channel TV 2 starts broadcasting the soap opera Hotel Cæsar .
- Hanover / Germany : The Lower Saxony state parliament receives the resignation letter from Minister President Gerhard Schröder ( SPD ) , who has been in office since 1990 .
Tuesday October 27, 1998
- Bonn / Germany : The members of the Bundestag elect Gerhard Schröder ( SPD ) as Federal Chancellor with 351 out of 669 possible votes . The vote for Schröder is six votes above the number of mandate holders belonging to the governing parties SPD and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen .
- Panmunjeom / Korea : 50 trucks with 501 cattle arrive in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea . The vehicles and pets are a gift from the South Korean entrepreneur Chung Ju-yung , founder of the Hyundai Group , to the population of the totalitarian ruled neighboring country and follow a delivery of 500 animals from June, making Ju-yung 1,001 in total so-called "reunification cows" handed over to North Korea.

- Hanover / Germany : The state parliament elects Gerhard Glogowski ( SPD ) as the new Prime Minister of Lower Saxony . His predecessor in office, Gerhard Schröder, is now Federal Chancellor .

- Amrum / Germany : The cargo ship Pallas runs aground on the German North Sea coast . As a result, over 240 t of oil run into the area of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park .
- Bratislava / Slovakia : Mikuláš Dzurinda from the SDK party becomes the new prime minister of the country at the head of a four-party coalition .
- Cape Canaveral / United States : John Glenn returns to space after 36 years as part of the STS-95 mission aboard the space shuttle Discovery and, at 77, becomes the oldest astronaut in history. In 1962 , the current Senator from Ohio orbited the earth three times in the Mercury Atlas 6 mission.
- Guanaja / Honduras : The tall ship Fantome from 1927 is lost with a crew of 31 on the Caribbean coast off Honduras.

- Tirana / Albania : On the last day of the Tirana International Conference , the Austrian chairman of the Council for General Affairs of the European Union, Wolfgang Schüssel, asked Albania to work towards a political solution to the Kosovo conflict . Albania must work for a dialogue between Serbs and Kosovar Albanians .
