- Schwerin / Germany : The first job parade takes place in the state capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The host is the local branch of the German Federation of Trade Unions .

- Kaiserslautern / Germany : On the penultimate match day of the 1997/98 season , 1. FC Kaiserslautern won the German soccer championship with a 4-0 win over VfL Wolfsburg . It is the first time since the Bundesliga was introduced 35 years ago that a newly promoted champion has become a champion.

- Brussels / Belgium : After two days of negotiations, the heads of state and government of the European Union decide to introduce the European Monetary Union on January 1, 1999, to which eleven countries will initially belong. The first president of the European Central Bank is Dutchman Wim Duisenberg appointed.

- Vatican City : Just a few hours after being appointed 31st Commander of the Pontifical Swiss Guard , Alois Estermann is murdered together with his wife . - Nouméa / New Caledonia : The French government , representatives of the New Caledonian Canakian and Socialist National Liberation Front and the Movement for the Caledonian Republic sign an agreement on the transfer of competences of French sovereignty to institutions of the former French colony of New Caledonia. The ratification should take place this year. Political currents in New Caledonia regard the agreement as a preliminary stage to full sovereignty .

- Astana / Kazakhstan : The capital of the country is renamed from Aqmola to Astana. "Astana" is the Kazakh word for "capital".
- The Hague / Netherlands : In the election for the Second Chamber of the States General , the so-called “Paars Coalitie” ( German “Purple Coalition” ) from the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA), the Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie and the Democrats 66 party will be Prime Minister Wim Kok (PvdA) confirmed in office.
- East Africa : Units of the Eritrean armed forces occupy the so-called “ Yirga Triangle”, whose affiliation to Eritrea or Ethiopia is unclear. Ethiopia immediately demands the withdrawal of soldiers from the approximately 400 km² area.
- Paris / France : With a 3-0 win against Lazio Rome , Inter Milan wins the football - UEFA Cup for the third time . For the first time, only one final game will be played.

- Birmingham / United Kingdom : The singer Dana International wins the 43rd Eurovision de la Chanson Grand Prix with the title Diva for Israel .
