The Surat Thani Airport ( Thai : ท่าอากาศยาน สุราษฎร์ธานี ; IATA Code :; URT ICAO code : VTSB) is an airport located in the district Phunphin of Surat Thani province in the southern region of Thailand .
General
The airport , located 21 km west of Surat Thani , is also the location of the 7th Air Force Squadron.
It has an asphalt runway . In 2015, 1.86 million passengers were handled, making Surat Thani among the ten busiest airports in Thailand. The number of passengers almost quintupled between 2009 and 2015.
On December 11, 1998, an Airbus A310-204 of Thai Airways crashed into a rubber tree plantation when it attempted the third approach in heavy rain; 101 of the 146 people on board died.
Military use
The Royal Thai Air Force uses the same runways as the RTAFB Surat Thani military airfield . The 7th Squadron is stationed here with two squadrons, the 701st and 702nd squadrons.
The main type of service for many years was the Northrop F-5 . In December 2010, Thailand took over the first two Saab 340s from Swedish production and two months later, in February 2011, the first six Gripen from the same manufacturer arrived in southern Thailand, including four two-seaters.
