Galina Ulanova ( Russian Галина Сергеевна Уланова ., Scientific transliteration Galina Sergeevna Ulanova ; * December 26, 1909 . Jul / 8. January  1910 greg. In Saint Petersburg , † 21st March 1998 in Moscow ) was a Russian prima ballerina .

Life

Galina Ulanowa was the daughter of a solo dancer and a dancer and ballet master at the Mariinsky Theater . She began her training at the age of nine at the ballet school attached to the theater. After graduating in May 1928, she danced for the ballet company of the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater , which later became the Kirov Ballet . Soon after, she got her first solo appearances. The audience loved her above all for her expressiveness, with which she succeeded in giving life to the characters. For example, in 1932 she played Jeanne in the Drambalet by Wassili Wainonen The Flames of Paris , in which the people of Paris in 1792 choreographed the revolution on stage. In 1940 she danced Juliet in the Russian premiere of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet .

After several guest appearances, she switched to the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow in 1944 . She remained connected to the Bolshoi Ballet as a ballet teacher even after her retirement as a dancer in 1963.

In recognition of her achievements, she was awarded the title of Prima Ballerina Assoluta . In 1960 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1994 the asteroid (5421) Ulanova was named after her.

Galina Ulanova was married twice but had no children.

The city of Moscow had a tomb erected for the world-famous dancer in the Novodevichy Cemetery , on which she is shown in the role of Odette from the ballet Swan Lake .
