Paul Apak Angilirq

Paul Apak Angilirq (born 1954 in Canada , † December 1998 in Canada) was a screenwriter and film producer . He belonged to the Inuit ethnic group .

Life

Angilirq began to learn the film trade in 1978 with a grant from the Canadian government. At the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation , founded in 1981 , he became one of the first film producers of his tribe and in 1992 received a Special Recognition Award from this television station. He filmed expeditions in Greenland and through the Bering Strait .

Paul Apak Angilirq wrote the screenplay for Atanarjuat - The Fast Runner ( Atanarjuat - The Fast Runner ) (2001). Zacharias Kunuk produced and directed the film. It is the first Canadian feature film to be written, produced, directed and acted by Inuit. Angilirq was vice president and co-founder of the film production company Isuma and co-produced this film with others. Before the film was finished, he died of cancer.

In 2002 Paul Apak Angilirq posthumously won two Genie Awards for Best Screenplay and Best Picture (shared with others) for Atanarjuat - The Legend of the Fast Runner .
