Horst Ludwig Störmer (born April 6, 1949 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German physicist . He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1998.

Life

Horst Störmer was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1949 and grew up with his younger brother Heinz in Sprendlingen . After graduating from the Goetheschule in Neu-Isenburg in 1967 , he wanted to start studying architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt , but enrolled in construction because he had missed the registration period. However, he quickly realized that he did not have much talent in this area. So he moved to the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt , but since he had missed the registration period for physics here too , he began to study mathematics and only switched to physics in 1968.

After graduating in 1974 at the Werner Martienssen chair under Professor Eckhardt Hoenig (* 1942) - Gerd Binnig was also working in the research group at the same time - he moved to the high-field magnet laboratory in Grenoble in the working group of Prof. Hans-Joachim Queisser . After receiving his doctorate in 1977 at the University of Stuttgart , he went to Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill (New Jersey) , New Jersey , where he initially worked as a postdoc . He got a permanent position in 1978 and was appointed head of the department for electrical and optical properties of solids in 1983 and director of the physical research laboratory at Bell Labs in 1992. Störmer moved to Columbia University in New York in 1997 and was appointed Professor of Applied Physics in 1998.

He is married to Dominique Parchet, whom he met in Grenoble and who works for the United Nations .

Horst Störmer worked on two-dimensional electron gases in Murray Hill . After working out the idea of modulation doping in the first few weeks , he got a permanent position at Bell Labs just a few months later. In collaboration with Daniel Tsui and Arthur Gossard , on October 6, 1981, he wanted to examine one of these modulation-doped chips in the MIT high-field laboratory in Cambridge for signs of the hypothetical electron crystal - however, they discovered the fractional quantum Hall effect ("fractional QHE").

In 1998 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics together with Robert B. Laughlin and Daniel Chee Tsuifor their discovery of a new type of quantum fluid with fractionally charged excitations ”.
