Franz Scholz (theologian)

Franz Scholz (born December 10, 1909 in Breslau ; Silesia ; † September 1, 1998 in Groß-Umstadt near Darmstadt ) was a Roman Catholic priest and theologian .

Life

Franz Scholz was a student at the Matthias Gymnasium in Breslau , and after graduating from high school he studied in Freiburg im Breisgau . He learned the Polish language in Cracow and Lublin . In 1934 he was ordained a priest and got a pastor's position at the Holy Cross Church in Wroclaw , where he looked after the Polish seasonal workers . He received his doctorate from the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Breslau , was a temporary tutor at the Archbishop's Theological Convict in Breslau and then went to St. Bonifatius Church in Görlitz. The eastern part of the city of Görlitz was separated in 1945 by the Oder-Neisse line and named Zgorzelec in Polish . When the remaining Germans were to become Polish in 1946, he left the city for Cottbus .

After the founding of the GDR , he went to West Germany in 1949 . He became a lecturer in moral theology at the Philosophical-Theological University in Königstein im Taunus . In 1955 he completed his habilitation with the moral theologian Theodor Müncker in Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1956 Franz Scholz taught at the chair for moral theology, ethics and Christian social theory at the Philosophical-Theological University in Fulda . He received additional teaching positions at the Universities of Marburg and Frankfurt am Main, where he was also appointed honorary professor .

The diocese of Fulda appointed him in 1962 as honorary cathedral chapter . In 1972 Franz Scholz became full professor for moral theology at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Augsburg . In 1976 after his retirement he was still active as a pastor in Kleinzimmer , Darmstadt-Dieburg district ( diocese of Mainz ). In 1985 Franz Scholz resigned from parish pastoral care. He spent the last years of his life in Dieburg . He was also buried there.

Act

Franz Scholz was a theologian with extensive practical experience in his parish as well as in prison chaplaincy. He was also familiar with Polish people and their way of life. Scholz left a rich written estate. Franz Scholz also published several publications on the subject of “Expulsion of the German Population from Silesia”. He particularly expressed his opposition to the beatification of the former Primate of Poland Cardinal August Hlond . An application for beatification of Hlond has been "on hold" in the Vatican since January 1992.

The Holy See honored the services of Franz Scholz in 1966 with the appointment to the papal honorary chaplain and in 1995 with the dignity of a papal honorary prelate . The Silesian Landsmannschaft awarded him the Schlesierschild in 1989 . In 1991 he was granted honorary citizenship of the city of Görlitz.
