Gustav Nezval - 1937

Gustav Nezval , real name Augustin Nezval (born November 18, 1907 , † September 17, 1998 ), was a Czech stage and film actor .

Life

He was born the son of the locksmith František Nezval and his wife Aloisia. Instead of his parents' preferred career as a priest , he attended a technical school and for some time earned his living as a building designer. He never attended a school of dramatic arts. His passion for the theater led to attempts on the amateur stage. Later he worked on various traveling stages . He then played at the Intimni Theater in Prague (1930–1931), at the South Bohemian Theater in České Budějovice (1931–1932), at the Švanda Theater in Prague (1932–1934), at the Vlasta Burian Theater in Prague (1934–1935), on National Theater in Ostrava (1935–1938), at the National Theater in Brno (1938–1941), and finally at the Vinohrady Theater in Prague (1941–1977). Even after his retirement in 1977 he has appeared from time to time on the Vinohrady stage as a guest actor. He had his last appearance in 1997.

Thanks to his stature, his appearance and the charming manners as well as his voice, he first embodied various lovers' characters. As he got older, he began to adapt to other roles and began a career as a classical actor in the plays of Czech national literature. He also played in pieces by Tyl, Jirasek, Vrchlicky, Langer, Sramek, Capek, Hasek, Sophocles, Sprung de Vega, Moliere, Flaubert, Strindberg, Rostand, Schiller, Goldoni, Gorkij, Balzac, Lermontov, Pushkin, Tolstoy and Shakespeare.

In July 1937 he married the dancer Gertrude Nettel. They were married 57 years later and had two sons until her death. He had two hobbies, literature and gardening.

As a film actor, Nezval first appeared in the late 1930s. He made his film debut in the comedy "Jarčin Professor", which came out in 1937. His performance caught the attention of some leading Czech film directors. This quickly led to appearances in many similar films. One of his most famous films was "Jan Cimbura". The film is based on a Czech literary classic of the same name from the 19th century by Jindřich Šimon Baar . Shortly after the war, he played a leading role in the movie Men Without Wings (original title: Muži bez křídel ). The film was later honored by the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1946. In many films he was the partner of some of the most famous Czech actresses of the era. One of them was Lída Baarová . He played his last film role at the age of 90 in the war drama Sekal must die (original title: Je třeba zabít Sekala ). He appeared in a total of 52 films between 1937 and 1998.

He has also appeared on radio and TV shows. However, some of these appearances took place at the beginning of TV broadcasting in Czechoslovakia in the early 1950s, so very few records exist.

Seven years after his death, in 2005, Pavlína Vajčnerova published a biography under the name Gustav Nezval - oči spíše sympatické .
