Kristian Lauvik Gjelstad made his debut in the Telemark World Cup on January 26, 2016 in La Plagne, France, in a parallel sprint . A day later he was able to achieve his first World Cup point with 30th place in the sprint. Gjelstad took part in the Telemark Junior World Championship 2016 in Les Contamines-Montjoie and was eliminated in the parallel sprint in the sixteenth finals. The 2017 junior title fights in Rjukan were more successful when they won two medals: First, on March 1, 2017, he won the silver medal behind Guillaume Issautier in the Classic and one day later he became the junior world champion in the sprint. In the final parallel sprint, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. In addition, he started several World Cup competitions in the 2016/17 season , with a 15th place in the Hurdal sprint being his best result. After the World Cup season he competed at the Telemark World Championship 2017 in La Plagne, where he was eliminated in the sixteenth finals of the parallel sprint and finished 26th in the Classic and 30th in the sprint.
In 2017/18 Gjelstad was part of the regular cast of the Norwegian World Cup team. He was able to classify himself regularly in the points and reached the 14th place in the overall World Cup. At the Telemark Junior World Championships 2018 in Mürren , he was denied winning a medal.
