- January 15 - The Austrian public broadcaster ORF and the Franco-German cultural channel ARTE sign a cooperation agreement.
 - January 17 - The website Drudge Report speculated about an affair in the White House , the US President Bill Clinton will be involved. When the Washington Post picked up the subject four days later, the Lewinsky affair got rolling.
 - March - At the CeBIT is MPMan F10 presented the first MP3 player for the mass market.

 - April 8th - Annemarie Cordes , German actress, dies in Wiesbaden at the age of 79 . She was best known for the role of Steve Temple on the side of René Deltgen in the Paul Temple radio plays by Francis Durbridge.
 - April 11th - Francis Durbridge , British writer and screenwriter, dies in London at the age of 85 . He was best known for the radio play series about the detective Paul Temple and the multi-part television films such as Das Halstuch and Tim Frazer , which coined the term street sweeper in the early 1960s .
 - May 3 - Raimund Harmstorf , German actor ( Der Seewolf , Michael Strogoff ) dies at the age of 58 in Marktoberdorf , Allgäu .
 - August 14th - Hans-Joachim Kulenkampff , German showmaster dies at the age of 77 in his adopted home town of Seeham in Austria.
 - August 18 - Jürgen Pooch , German actor, dies in Turkey at the age of 55 . He was best known for the numerous television broadcasts from the Hamburg Ohnsorg Theater .
 - August 19 - Hellmut Andics , Austrian journalist, screenwriter ( Ringstrasse Palace ) and documentary filmmaker dies a few days before his 76th birthday in Vienna .
 - September 4th - Hans Brenner , Austrian actor dies at the age of 59 in Munich .
 - September 27th - Harald Vock , German director and author dies at the age of 73 in Hamburg .
 - November 28th - Hans Mohl , long-time moderator of the health magazine Praxis , dies of cancer shortly before his 70th birthday.
 - December 6 - Max Eckard , German actors, especially from the street sweepers Tim Frazer of Francis Durbridge known dies aged 84 (* 1914).
