- The first volume of the ARD issued Broadcasting Service Bulletins appear.
- After the renovation of the building, founded in 1953 refers Radio Free Berlin , the Haus des Rundfunks in Masurenallee.
- Sony launches the MK-55 and TR-72 transistor radios , with the TR-72 already being exported to North America and Europe. The devices are not yet marketed under the Sony name .
Radio
- January 4th - The WDR in Cologne begins broadcasting the 8-part radio play Paul Temple and the Gilbert case by Francis Durbridge with René Deltgen , Annemarie Cordes and Kurt Lieck in the leading roles (director: Eduard Hermann ).
- April 3 - The radio in the GDR begins to broadcast propaganda programs in Arabic as well . The background is developments such as the Suez Crisis , the Eisenhower Doctrine , and the Algerian War , which increasingly bring this part of the world into the ideological East-West conflict .
- April 8th - The ORF lunchtime magazine Automobile Drivers On the Go has its premiere. The program is broadcast every week and will remain in the program until 1999.

- January 1st - The ORF ends its television test operations and broadcasts a regular program six days a week.
- January 1st - The ORF broadcasts the first edition of the newscast Zeit im Bild .
- January 6 - Elvis Presley makes his last appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show .
- Jan. 23 - On ABC is that of Walt Disney presented TV special Our Friend the Atom ( Our Friend The Atom to see). The film, which is aimed at secondary school students , introduces the basics of atomic theory and nuclear technology in the spirit of Eisenhower's administration . The German physicist Heinz Haber can also be seen.
- March 31 - CBS airs a color TV version of Cinderella , with 21-year-old Julie Andrews in the title role. The music is by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II .
- April 1st - In an April Fool's joke that has become famous , the BBC reports on an alleged spaghetti tree in Switzerland .
- August 3 - The first episode of the entertainment program Zum Blauen Bock can be seen on ARD .
- October 28th - Panorama , the first time-sensitive magazine on ARD , starts .
- December 25th - The BBC broadcasts Queen Elizabeth II's first Royal Christmas Message on television.

- October 29 - Dan Castellaneta , American voice actor ( Homer Simpson ) is born in Chicago .
- November 5 - Jon-Erik Hexum , American actor and model ( hotel , A dream man on the front page ) is born in Englewood, New Jersey († 1984).
Died
- December 13th - Georg Pahl , German actor (including at the Ohnsorg Theater ) and radio play speaker, dies at the age of 64 in Hamburg-Rissen .
