General
- In 1949 there were drastic changes in media policy in Germany. In the course of the year a number of radio and transmission systems will be handed over to German authorities by the three Western occupying powers . Thus Radio Munich on 25 January, the Hessian Broadcasting on January 28, Radio Bremen in April and Radio Stuttgart dismissed on July 22 from the direct Allied control. At the same time, the state broadcasting corporations are brought into being under the public law of the federal states.
- In Japan , Ibuka Masaru and Morita Akio designed one of the first Japanese post-war tape recorders for the company they founded, Totsuko, the forerunner of Sony , and brought it onto the market towards the end of the year.
- February 21st - In France , the state broadcaster Radiodiffusion-télévision française (RTF) is created, under the direct control of the government.
- May 12th - end of the Berlin blockade .
- May 23 - Adoption of the Basic Law , establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany .
- October 1 - Proclamation of the People's Republic of China by Mao Zedong .
- October 7th - The German People's Council puts the constitution of the GDR into force, which de facto creates a second German state on the territory of the Soviet occupation zone .
Radio
- January 2nd - on the occasion of the 200th birthday of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , the Northwest German Radio in Hamburg begins broadcasting the 35-part radio play series Goethe tells his life about Hans Egon Gerlach . Mathias Wieman spoke the title role and also directed the fourth part. Ludwig Cremer was previously in charge of the game.
- February 28 - Bayerischer Rundfunk broadcasts for the first time on an FM transmitter.
- April 1 - With the accession of the former Dominion Newfoundland to Canada , the Canadian CBC takes over the facilities of the Broadcasting Corporation of Newfoundland (BNC).
- May 1st - From the area of the Soviet Zone , the Deutschlandsender starts operations with its program, which is primarily intended for the three western occupation zones of Germany.
- 19./20. May - Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) broadcasts the debate on the Basic Law live in an 18-hour broadcast. Bavaria is the only German state that initially rejects the constitution.
- September 17th - The Hessischer Rundfunk broadcasts the first episode of the radio play series Die Hesselbachs by and with Wolf Schmidt , directed by Karlheinz Schilling .

- November 7 to January 9 1950 - The first miniseries about the British mystery writer and amateur detective Paul Temple of Francis Durbridge starts as a ten-part series titled Paul Temple and the affair Gregory . In this NWDR production , Eduard Hermann and Fritz Schröder-Jahn took turns directing. René Deltgen spoke the title role .

- In Mexico , the first television license is granted to the private entrepreneur Rómulo O'Farril . In Cuba , a television pilot program goes into operation.
- The US retail chain Sears is offering televisions in its mail order catalog for the first time.
- January 17 - The US sitcom The Goldbergs premieres.
- January 25 - The Emmy Television Award is presented for the first time in Los Angeles . Shirley Dinsdale is honored as the best television actress .
- June 27th - Captain Video and His Video Rangers series airs for the first time. The approximately 30-minute show, which is presented live, may be the first science fiction series on television.
- August 7th - The US broadcaster MBS is broadcasting the first episode of the Martin Kane crime series , Privat Eye with William Gargan in the title role.
