- Paraguay is entering the television age.
- France can conclude an agreement with the Soviet Union on the introduction of the SECAM color television standard developed in France . For political reasons, this system of color transmission remained standard in the GDR and most of the Eastern Bloc countries until the early 1990s. But countries such as Greece , Iran , Iraq , Libya and Egypt , which later switched to the PAL standard, originally imported the SECAM system.
- April 6 - The first commercial communications satellite, Intelsat I , called the Early Bird , is launched into orbit. It can be used to broadcast live television events on an intercontinental basis. The satellite remains in use until 1969.
- April 19 - The US information theorist and later co-founded by chipmaker Intel , Gordon Moore , published in a magazine article that was later named after Moore's Law (Moore's Law). It predicts that the performance of integrated circuits will double roughly every two years.
- August - Sony introduces the CV-2000 , an early home video recorder for the American market. The device, which is equipped with a 1/2 "inch tape that is typical for the manufacturer, looks similar to a commercially available tape recorder and works like this with open supply reels and a take-up reel. It is particularly popular in university training.
- October 12 - In Austria, the referendum for an independent radio, supported by the daily newspaper Kurier and most other non-party newspapers, achieved a total of 832,353 signatures. It is the first and most successful referendum of the Second Republic.

- January 1st - In Switzerland, the former national broadcaster Beromünster is renamed Radio DRS (Radio of German and Rhaeto-Romanic Switzerland).
- October 4th - The midday magazine The World At One launches on BBC Home Service .
- December 25th - Radio St. Helena starts broadcasting .

- January - GDR television starts broadcasting the (sports or studio) program Sport aktuell on a regular basis .
- January 4th - NDR and SFB start their joint third program of the Nordkette.
- February 1st - Swiss television broadcasts commercials for the first time .
- April 20 - BBC's second TV channel , BBC Two, starts broadcasting . At the same time, the existing BBC television channel will be renamed BBC One .
- May 21 - German television broadcasts the critical news magazine Monitor for the first time.
- May 26th - The game show Spiel ohne Grenzen can be seen for the first time on German television.
- July 9th - In Germany, ARD begins broadcasting the television series Auf der Flucht with David Janssen in the role of Dr. Richard Kimble and Barry Morse as his pursuers Lt. Philip Gerard .
- August 1 - In the UK , cigarette advertising is banned from television. However, commercials for pipe tobacco and cigars remain legal until 1992.
- September 4th - German television broadcasts the current drawing of the lottery numbers for the first time . The program is moderated by Karin Dinslage .
- September 8 - The US television is the first episode of the comedy series I Dream of Jeannie (I Dream of Jeannie) with Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman can be seen in the lead roles.
- September 25th - German television shows the first episode of the music program Beat-Club . The program conceived by Michael Leckebusch is the first music program specifically for young people on German-speaking television and will remain on the program until 1972. Initially, their programming is dedicated to the zeitgeist of the 1960s, but towards the end of the term, more and more representatives of Krautrock appear.
- October 21 - The crime series The public prosecutor has the floor premieres on GDR television .
- December - The first public trials with color television begin in Austria.

- January 20 - Alan Freed , American radio DJ, dies in Palm Springs at the age of 43 . Freed played a key role in the spread of rock 'n' roll and rhythm and blues on radio in the 1950s .
- April 27 - Edward R. Murrow , American radio and television journalist ( CBS ) year 57 died in Pawling ( New York ). Murrow reported on the Anschluss of Austria in 1938 and became known through critical reporting in the McCarthy era .
- May 3 - Bernhard Jakschtat , German folk , opera and operetta singer (baritone), radio play speaker and radio artist dies in Hamburg at the age of 69 . He has worked extensively at NORAG since 1924 .
- July 11 - Ray Collins , American actor dies age of 75 in Santa Monica ( California ). He was best known for his portrayal of the police lieutenant Arthur Tragg in the long-lived television series Perry Mason .
