General
- At various trade fairs in Europe, America and Japan, the first camcorders , ie devices that combine video cameras with appropriate recording devices in one housing, are presented. One of the first models available is the Betamovie BMC-100 from Sony , based on the Betamax system, but whose recorder part can only record videos, not play them back. A year later, the JVC GR-C1 , the first full-fledged camcorder, appears. The device with the eye-catching red housing can also play the recorded films and was immortalized in 1985 by its prominent appearance in the first part of the cinema trilogy Back to the Future by Robert Zemeckis .
- Ron Miller , son-in-law of the company's founder, becomes CEO of the Walt Disney Company . After a long period of creeping decline since the death of Walt Disney (1966), he opened up new fields of business and a new reputation for the traditional group with the establishment of Touchstone Pictures and the television station Disney Channel .

- July 19 - Erik Ode , German actor and voice actor dies at the age of 72 in Kreuth , Upper Bavaria. Ode played the role of Commissioner Herbert Keller in the ZDF series Der Kommissar from 1969–1976 .
- September 28th - Dieter Seefranz, Austrian television journalist, actor and author, dies in Vienna at the age of 42 .
