2006: Caricatures depicting the founder of the religion Mohammed trigger demonstrations and heated debates about the limits of freedom of expression

General

  • The caricatures published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten under the title The Face of Mohammeds ( Muhammeds ansigt ) trigger violent protests in the Islamic world, including calls for murder against the authors.
  • May 18 - The ORF journalist Armin Wolf receives the Robert Hochner Prize endowed with 7,200 euros . In his acceptance speech, he sharply criticized the “unrestrained” influence of the black-blue federal government on the ORF, especially on political reporting.
  • August 18th - Alexander Wrabetz is elected to the ORF Board of Trustees as the new General Director of ORF.
  • September 18 - Due to the government and confidence crisis in Hungary , the main building of the Hungarian television station MTV in Budapest is briefly occupied by demonstrators critical of the government.
  • October 7 - The Russian journalist Anna Stepanovna Politkovskaya is murdered in Moscow .
  • October 9th - Google takes over the Internet video portal YouTube for 1.31 billion euros.
  • October 26th - The ORF begins broadcasting in DVB-T .
