- The caricatures published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten under the title The Face of Mohammeds ( Muhammeds ansigt ) trigger violent protests in the Islamic world, including calls for murder against the authors.
- May 18 - The ORF journalist Armin Wolf receives the Robert Hochner Prize endowed with 7,200 euros . In his acceptance speech, he sharply criticized the “unrestrained” influence of the black-blue federal government on the ORF, especially on political reporting.

- October 11 - NBC will broadcast the first episode of the Tina Fey- designed sitcom 30 Rock . The episodes, which revolve around the production of the fictional television program The Girlie Show , cast a loving, satirical look at the background of the showbiz.

- December 13th - French-speaking Belgian television broadcasts the mockumentary Bye Bye Belgium , which reports on the alleged declaration of independence of the Flemish part of Belgium. Thousands of viewers in Belgium think they are "real" and call the station.

- February 8 - Ernst Grabbe , German actor, dies in Hamburg at the age of 79 . He was best known for the numerous television broadcasts from the Hamburg Ohnsorg Theater .
- March 1st - Annette von Aretin , in 1954 the first TV announcer at BR , in the entire German-speaking area as a member of the advice team for the quiz program Was bin ich? known, dies at the age of 85 in Munich .
- May 2nd - Hugo Kirnbauer , Austrian radio pioneer , publicist and radio presenter ( Die Technische Rundschau , 1955–1997) dies at the age of 87 in Linz , Upper Austria .
- May 14th - Günther Nenning , Austrian journalist and host of Club 2 dies at the age of 84 in Waidring , Tyrol.
- July 3 - Hans Bierbrauer , German draftsman, caricaturist and painter, dies at the age of 84 in Eutin , Schleswig-Holstein. Bierbrauer became known as "Schnellbildner Oskar" in the TV series Dalli Dalli (1971–1986).
- July 7th - Rudi Carrell , Dutch-German showmaster ( Churning Band , Herzblatt ) and actor dies in Bremen at the age of 71 .
- July 25th - Elisabeth Volkmann , German actress, comedian and voice actress (German voice of the cartoon character Marge Simpson ) dies in Munich at the age of 70.
- August 21 - Klaus Höhne , German actor, radio play and voice actor dies at the age of 79 in Murnau am Staffelsee . He became known, among other things, as Tatortkommissar Konrad in the 1970s.
- September 3rd - Annemarie Wendl , German actress, dies near Munich at the age of 91. Wendl was best known for playing the figure of the caretaker Else Kling in the television series Lindenstrasse .
- September 4th - Steve Irwin , Australian documentary filmmaker and animal rights activist, dies off the coast of Port Douglas at the age of 44 .
- September 15th - Mäni Weber , Swiss television presenter ( Dopplet or nüt ) dies at the age of 71 in Lucerne .
- November 10th - The German sports journalist Willy Knupp dies at the age of 70 in Cologne .
