- January 31 - The American-Iranian BBC journalist Roxana Saberi is arrested in Iran for illicitly buying alcohol. She is later sentenced to eight years in prison for espionage. Under international diplomatic pressure, her sentence was suspended on May 11 and Saberi was allowed to leave Iran.
- March 16 - The trial of Josef Fritzl begins in St. Pölten , Austria . The negotiation is accompanied by great international media interest.
- March 20 - On the occasion of the Iranian New Year celebrations , US President Barack Obama addresses the people of Iran via the Internet with an offer of talks . Most of the speech, which is not distributed by the state television and radio stations or by newspapers published in Iran, reaches its destination largely through Persian-language radio stations broadcasting outside of Iran.
- March 20 - ORF General Director Alexander Wrabetz presents a comprehensive strategy paper on the future of public broadcasting in Austria.
- April 25 - In the 20th awarding of the Austrian Television Award Romy be Monica Bleibtreu , Wolfgang Bock and Robert Palfrader honored.
- June 12th - After the Iranian presidential elections , accusations of electoral fraud are raised, leading to weeks of protests and mass demonstrations , some of them violent, across Iran . With the Iranian regime hindering the work of traditional media and expelling foreign correspondents, the Internet , cell phone cameras and blogs are becoming important sources of information about what is happening inside and outside the country.
- July - Davut Dursun replaces Aykut Zahid Akman as Chairman of the Regulatory Authority for Private Broadcasting in Turkey ( RTÜK ).
- July 17th - The internet mail order company amazon.com deletes some e-books (already downloaded and paid for) , including among others, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell from its customers' Amazon Kindle readers. This measure is explained by the company with unclear DRMs of the affected files and sharply criticized in public.
- August 20 - The 327 meter high transmission mast Gartow 1 was blown up . Even before 1990, many GDR citizens were able to receive the ZDF program and the third program of the North German Radio via this transmission mast.

- January 1st - The French international broadcaster Radio France Internationale announces that it is cutting around 200 jobs and intends to discontinue its German-language service.
- February 1 - In Leipzig , the Austrian radio play author Eberhard Petschinka is presented with the Günter Eich Prize .

- February 7 - On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran , BBC Two is showing the three-part documentary series Iran and the West .
- February 17th - The Austrian private broadcaster ATV broadcasts the first episode of the documentary series ATV Dokument . The issue with the title "Jörg Haider - politician, populist, pop star" attracted up to 340,000 viewers, which enabled the station to increase its market share considerably.
