General
- January 1 - The newly established German institutions equipment MDR and ORB take on their regular broadcasting.
- January 1st - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania joins the NDR as the fourth federal state.
- October 1st - The SFB leaves the joint television chain with NDR and Radio Bremen and forms an independent television program for Berlin with B1 .
- October 26th - ORF television puts the new graphics concept designed by Neville Brody into operation. The two television channels FS1 and FS2 are renamed ORF 1 and ORF 2 . From now on, the respective corner logo is permanently displayed.
- October 31 - The RTLplus TV channel , which belongs to the RTL Group , is renamed RTL Television . The addition of television is largely omitted in the program.
Radio
- In Poland , the religious broadcaster Radio Maryja, founded by Tadeusz Rydzyk , goes into operation. It is run by Catholic clergy and has repeatedly come under criticism for its sharp anti-Semitic , xenophobic and Polish nationalist positions.
- January - The first edition of the DJ mix show Swound Sound System with DJ Makossa & Mc Sugar B can be heard on Ö3 .
- January 16 - An edition of the Ö3 broadcast designed by Fritz Ostermayer Die Musicbox , which under the title Josef Fenz tidies up his apartment, notices something and thinks about it again , makes Hermes Phettberg a bigger one beyond the borders of Vienna Audience known throughout Austria.
- April 19 - Ö1 introduces the classic night .
- May 1st - Blue Danube Radio is expanding its program times and broadcasts daily between 6 a.m. and 1 a.m. The station is advertised in its own spots on the ORF television programs .
- June 1 - The radio program RIAS 2 is privatized and renamed 94.3 rs2 .
- June 22nd - Radio Wimbledon , the official radio broadcaster for the Wimbledon Championships , starts operations.
- July 1st - Radio PSR goes on air in Saxony .
- September 1st - Structural change of the radio programs of Radio Bremen : Radio Bremen 2 becomes a pure word station with a focus on information and culture, Radio Bremen 3 changes into a classic wave.
- October 1st - The Austrian radio stations Ö1 and Ö3 celebrate the 25th year of their existence with an extensive special program.

- May 14th - The series from Denmark Goldregen premieres on First German Television .
- May 22nd - The US airs the final episode of The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson . NBC announces that Jay Leno will be its successor as host.

- April 20 - Benny Hill , British comedian ( The Benny Hill Show , 1969–1989) dies at the age of 68 in Teddington, Greater London.
- May 8 - Otto Šimánek , Czech actor, dies in Prague at the age of 67 . Šimánek became known internationally as the performer of the figure of Pan Tau .
- April 24th - Wolfram Schaerf , German actor and voice actor dies in Hamburg at the age of 69. Schaerf played roles in numerous TV productions such as Die Schwarzwaldklinik or Der Landarzt . As a voice actor, he took on the role of Jonathan Quayle Higgins in the German dubbing of the crime series Magnum .
- May 8th - Fritz Bachschmidt , German actor ( Gottlieb Griese in the ARD series Lindenstrasse ) dies at the age of 63 in Cologne.
- May 17 - Lawrence Welk , American big band leader and television personality ( The Lawrence Welk Show , 1951–1982), dies in Santa Monica at the age of 89 .
- May 26th - Hans Epskamp , German actor dies at the age of 88 in Berlin . He was known from numerous television films and series, such as B. Kara Ben Nemsi Effendi .
- June 6th - Werner Kreindl , Austrian actor ( SOKO 5113 , TV series since 1976) dies at the age of 64 in Wagrain .
- August 7th - Eberhard Fechner , German director, dies in Hamburg at the age of 65 .
- October 15 - Hanno Thurau , German actor, dies in Hamburg at the age of 53 . He was best known for the numerous television broadcasts from the Hamburg Ohnsorg Theater .
- October 16 - Shirley Booth , American theater, film, and television actress ( Hazel , TV series, 1961–1966, Duffy's Tavern , US radio com, 1941–1951) dies aged 94 in Massachusetts .
- October 26th - Kurt Hepperlin , German actor and documentary film director, dies in Nuremberg at the age of 72 .
- December 5th - Otto Koenig , Austrian zoologist and behavioral scientist , dies in Klosterneuburg at the age of 78 . Koenig became known to a wide audience in Austria through the long-standing ORF television program Rendezvous with animals and humans .
- December 23rd - Guido Baumann , Swiss journalist, quiz master and advice fox in What am I? dies in Munich at the age of 66.
