- The Arpanet will be decommissioned. This means that the Internet has lost its original military purpose and is now also available outside of university and military facilities.
- January 1st - ARD / ZDF teletext goes live
- June 25th - Apple introduces its QuickTime Player for multimedia applications.
- July 13th - In Vienna, the ORF board of trustees elects Gerd Bacher as general manager of the ORF. Bacher succeeds Thaddäus Podgorski .

- December 15 - DFF 1 stops broadcasting its program, the previous frequencies are kept by ARD and broadcast by Erste Deutsche Fernsehen . - February 13 - Heinz Haber , German physicist, writer and TV presenter dies in Hamburg at the age of 76 . Haber contributed through numerous television programs ( What is man looking for in space ) and book series ( What is what ) since the 1950s to the popular science dissemination of knowledge of astrophysics , space travel and nuclear energy .
- April 12th - Luis Trenker , Italian-Austrian mountaineer, author and film director, dies at the age of 97 in Bozen . Trenker became known to the German-speaking television audience through the series Luis Trenker told , which was broadcast from 1959 to 1973 .
- May 5 - Walter Bruch , German television pioneer, dies in Hanover at the age of 82 .
- May 16 - Jim Henson , American director and television producer, dies in New York City at the age of 53 . Henson was best known as the creator of the Muppets .
- June 21 - Lucy Millowitsch , German actress and director of the Millowitsch Theater dies at the age of 84 in Cologne . She became known nationwide primarily for the numerous television broadcasts from her theater.
- July 14th - Walter Sedlmayr , German folk actor ( Franz Josef Schöninger in the entertainment series Police Inspection 1 ) dies at the age of 64 in Munich .
- July 15 - Norbert Pawlicki , Austrian pianist and composer dies in Vienna at the age of 67 . Pawlicki played the music program of the Sunday morning matinee for decades. What's new? live on.
- September 7th - Alan JP Taylor , British historian, dies in London at the age of 84 . As an active pacifist, Taylor vigorously opposed British participation in the Korean War in his own radio broadcasts and was one of the first television historians in Great Britain to be trusted by a wide audience from the 1950s onwards. He was last seen in 1985 in the series How Wars End .
- November 18 - Wolfgang Büttner , German actor, radio play and voice actor dies at the age of 78 in Gauting - Stockdorf near Munich.
- November 24th - Helga Feddersen , German folk actress ( Ein Herz und ein Seele ), screenwriter ( Vier Stunden von Elbe 1 ) and comedian, dies at the age of 60 on Föhr .
