- The Austrian film rights dealer Herbert Kloiber becomes the sole owner of ATV through the acquisition of the station's former BAWAG PSK shares .
- January 7 - Due to the WGA writers' strike , the original 65th Golden Globe ceremony is canceled. Instead, the winners will be announced during a press conference.
- March - The publishing house for Berlin-Brandenburg publishes the comprehensive study on the history of GDR television published by media scientists Rüdiger Steinmetz and Reinhold Viehoff under the title Deutsches Fernsehen Ost. A program history of GDR television .
- March 27th - US researchers Carl Haber and Earl Cornell from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory succeeded in reconstructing the oldest known sound recording of a human voice using a computer program. The recording from 1860 was made with the help of a phonautograph and contains ten seconds of the French nursery rhyme Au clair de la lune .
- October 1 - American journalist Amy Goodman , founder of the political magazine Democracy Now , receives the Alternative Nobel Prize for her achievements in independent political reporting in the USA .
- October 28th - The Japanese JVC announces the discontinuation of the production of VHS sets. In the future, only VHS-DVD combis would be produced.
- November 4th - The book Operation TV from the research association SED-Staat is presented at the Foreign Office . The study examines the influence of the Stasi on the electronic media in East and West Germany.

- January 16 - The national broadcasting corporations of the ARD broadcast the first episode of the radio crime scene with “Der Emir” .
- January 27th - First broadcast of the science fiction radio play Tsunami over Germany by Heiner Grenzland . It was produced in 2007 by rbb Kulturradio (Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg) as an homage to The War of the Worlds by HG Wells . The author directed and composed the music.
- February 3 - Helmut Kopetzky , feature author at the former SFB in Berlin, receives the Axel Eggebrecht Prize, which was awarded for the first time and endowed with 10,000 euros, in recognition of his life's work.
- February 29th - The private music channel Superfly.fm goes on air in Vienna, specializing in soul and black music .
- March 31st - The folk music station Radio Melodie stops broadcasting.
- April 27th - Radio Eins broadcasts the program Kuttner und Kuttner - Father and Son with Jürgen and Sarah Kuttner for the last time .
- May 19 - The country and rock music station Truckradio can only be received via the Internet after the terrestrial frequencies have been switched off.

- January 2 - Due to a tentative agreement between the Writers Guild of America and production company Worldwide Pants Incorporated, Late Night with David Letterman and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson can go back on air despite the ongoing strike.
- January 5th - Super RTL begins the German-language premiere of the series Das Büro .
- January 12th - ATV broadcasts the first episode of the documentary soap Austria eats better .
- January 28th - Relaunch of the former Viennese local broadcaster Puls-TV under the new name Puls 4 as the second private full program in Austria that can be received terrestrially nationwide .
- February 17th - The first one drops Bluebear and Stupid for the time being.
- March 18 - Judith Rakers speaks her first 8 p.m. news bulletin . She replaces Caroline Hamann-Winkelmann who is going on her second baby break.
- May 11th - Episode 12 of the 19th season of The Simpsons is aired on FOX . The episode entitled "Mona Leaves-a" (German: "Goodbye, Mona") deals with the death of Homer Simpson's mother Mona .
- June 6th - In Austria, the DVB-H network goes into operation just in time for Euro 08 .
- July 25th - The first episode of the US series Sleeper Cell can be seen on German-speaking television on RTL II . The series is about Islamists who have formed a terrorist cell in the USA.
- August 25th - Sat.1 and ORF 1 include the telenovela Anna und die Liebe in the evening program.
- September 9th - The pay-TV channel FOX Channel premieres the HBO production The Wire in German.
- October 12th - At the gala for the presentation of the German Television Prize in Cologne, Marcel Reich-Ranicki declined the award he had received for his work as moderator and designer of the program Das literäre Quartett .
- October 13th - ARD announces that it will withdraw from live coverage of the Tour de France in the future . ARD chairman Fritz Raff justifies this step with the "drop in the sporting and thus also programmatic value" of the tour.
- October 16 - Blue Peter , the BBC 's children's program , celebrates its 50th birthday.

- November 24th - The knowledge magazine Galileo on ProSieben celebrates its tenth anniversary.
- November 24th and 25th - The second TV version of the Jack London novel The Sea Wolf premieres on ProSieben . In the role of sealers Captain Wolf Larsen is Thomas Kretschmann to see his counterpart Humphrey van Weyden is of Florian Stetter embodies. The reviews are quite different, as the ZDF film adaptation from 1971 is regarded as the "original" by large parts of the audience.
- November 27th - The ORF announces drastic austerity measures and announces that they want to part with 1000 employees by 2012.

- December 15 - Nickelodeon Germany and Comedy Central Germany share a broadcast slot and can no longer be received 24 hours a day.
- December 27th - ARD announces the end of Schmidt & Pocher for April 2009.
- December 28th - Robert Palfrader announces in an interview with the daily newspaper Austria the provisional end of Wir sind Kaiser at the end of 2009.

- February 2nd - Barry Morse , British actor, dies in London at the age of 89 . He was best known for the television series Auf der Flucht (as Lt. Philip Gerard) and Moon Base Alpha 1 (as Professor Victor Bergman).
- April 25th - Margit Humer-Seeber , Austrian actress and radio presenter dies at the age of 84 in Innsbruck .
- May 13 - Kalle Sändare , Swedish comedian and radio host dies at the age of 76.
- May 16 - Ulrich Makosch , German television journalist ( Lens , DFF foreign magazine , 1965–1989) dies in Berlin at the age of 75.
- June 15 - Tony Schwartz , American advertising specialist and political advisor, dies in New York at the age of 84 .
- August 7 - Bernie Brillstein , American television producer, dies in Los Angeles at the age of 77 .
- August 11th - Günther Schifter , Austrian jazz connoisseur and radio presenter ( shellac ), dies at the age of 84 in Salzburg.
- September 21 - Duncan Larkin, British-Austrian radio presenter ( FM4 , Blue Danube Radio ) dies at the age of 49 in Vienna .
- October 8th - Herbert Bötticher , German actor, numerous television roles for example in I marry a family , Tatort , Derrick or The country doctor dies at the age of 79 in Düsseldorf .
- October 10 - Kurt Weinzierl , Austrian actor ( The Piefke saga , Kottan determined , A real Viennese does not go under ) dies at the age of 77 in Munich.
- October 18 - Brigitte Xander , Austrian radio and television presenter, dies in Vienna at the age of 66. She was best known as the presenter of the Ö3 alarm clock and the Hundred Thousand Schillig quiz on the radio and as a juror for Dalli Dalli as well as the presenter of the ORF cookery program with celebrity requests to table on television.
- October 24th - Helmut Zilk , Austrian journalist, politician and former (television) director of ORF dies at the age of 81.
