- Sony brings a higher quality alternative to Philips - Compact Cassette the analog audio format Elcaset on the market. It is hardly ever widespread; its sale is stopped in 1980.
- January 1st - In Germany the GEZ takes over the fee and participant administration of the public broadcasting corporations; previously the Deutsche Bundespost was responsible for these tasks .
- April 1 - In Los Altos , California set up Steve Jobs , Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne , the computer company Apple .
- September - The Japanese company JVC introduces the Video Home System (VHS). One year after Sony launched Betamax , another easy-to-use video system is now available to end users. The first mass-produced VHS recorder is the JVC HR-3300 , which is launched in Japan that same year and in Western Europe and the USA in 1978. In the late 1970s, replicas from smaller European manufacturers based on the HR-3300 were still being offered.
- October - The first issue of the elaborately designed reportage magazine GEO hits the newsagents.
- October 1st - Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) moves into its headquarters in Munich's Arnulfstrasse, less than 100 meters from its former headquarters on Rundfunkplatz.
- December 20 - ARD correspondent Lothar Loewe is expelled from the GDR because of a critical comment on the GDR border fortifications .

- Start of the Swiss youth broadcast Sounds on DRS 2 .
- March 1st - The ORF puts a traffic radio system for Austria into operation.
- April 7th - The radio play Centropolis by Walter Adler is awarded the radio play prize of the war blind .
- June 1st - Joachim Braun becomes the first ARD radio correspondent in South Africa .
- June 23 - Ö1 broadcasts the crime radio play Hartlgasse 16a , written by Helmut Zenker and produced by ORF and SWF , with which the investigative figure Kottan appears for the first time.
- December 3 - According to the provisions of the Second Statute of Autonomy , Ö3 is now officially broadcast in South Tyrol .

- January 11th - The Czechoslovak television company Československá televize is broadcasting the first episode of the crime series Die Kriminalfälle des Major Zeman ( The Thirty Cases of Major Zeman ), directed by Jiří Sequens . The first episode of the chronologically structured series is titled Tod am See and is about how the young Jan Zeman returned from the concentration camp in 1945 and decided to become a police officer. Another episode ( fox hunt ) deals with the communist February putsch by Klement Gottwald in 1948. Major Zeman differs not only in terms of its layout and structure from conventional (largely apolitical) television crime series, as has been common in public broadcasters on both sides of the Iron Curtain since the 1960s, it is primarily considered regime-loyal propaganda of the so-called " normalization " "after the Prague Spring 1968.
- January 20 - The broadcast of the film Shirin's Wedding by Helma Sanders-Brahms , which addresses the self-determination of a Turkish woman in Germany, sparked debates in the Turkish parliament and protests by Turkish groups in Germany.
- Feb. 13 - When ZDF is the 45-piece US crime series Petrocelli first seen on television.
- February 22nd - German television starts the 6-part children's series Das Haus der Krokodile .
- March 1 - Soviet television begins broadcasting the television hit parade Melodii i ritmy sarubeschnoi estrady (melodies and rhythms of the foreign hit parade). The program, which will remain on the program until Gorbachev came to power , primarily popularized non-political stars from the West such as Boney M. or ABBA .
- March 11th - The US crime series Detective Rockford runs on German television for the first time - a call is enough on television.
- September 9th - The children's series Maya the Bee based on the literary model Waldemar Bonsels is broadcast for the first time on German television.

- November 10th - The Brazilian television station Rede Globo broadcasts the first episode of the telenovela Die Sklavin Isaura ( A escrava Isaura ). The production, which is set in Brazil in the 19th century , is considered the most successful of its genre, is sold in 95 countries and is the first western television production that can also be seen in real socialist countries.
- December 5th - The TV series Aus 1001 Tag can be seen on German television
- December 28th - The first part of the four- part adventure game Michael Strogoff can be seen on ZDF. The lavishly produced miniseries with Raimund Harmstorf in the title role has been well received by both critics and audiences. The four-part series, based on the novel The Courier of the Tsar by Jules Verne , takes place during the reign of Russian Tsar Alexander II (1855–1881), was filmed mainly in Hungary and is about a (fictional) uprising of the Tatars against Russian rule.

- 28 April - Richard Hughes , British writer dies at the age of 76 in Harlech / Gwynedd , Wales . He is considered the author of the first European radio play, which was published for the United Kingdom by the BBC on January 15, 1924 under the original title Danger , or A Comedy of Danger and on August 24, 1925 in Germany by the Nordic Broadcasting Corporation under the title Danger was first sent.
- December 19 - Kurt Lieck , German actor and radio play speaker, dies at the age of 77 in Remagen . He was best known for the 12-part Paul Temple radio play series of the NWDR and WDR in the role of Sir Graham Forbes .
