- February 12 - The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is launched in Torquay , a seaside resort on the south coast of England . The 26 founding members include the BBC , Swiss Television , Sveriges Television and Radio Vatican . Germany joins ARD in 1953 , Austria also joins ORF in 1953 .
- March 15 - The Copenhagen Wave Plan comes into force.
- June 5 - The state broadcasting corporations Bayerischer Rundfunk , Hessischer Rundfunk , Radio Bremen , Süddeutscher Rundfunk , Südwestfunk and Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk join forces to form the working group of the public broadcasters of the Federal Republic of Germany ( ARD ).

- May 1 - With Springbok Radio , the first commercial radio broadcaster in South Africa starts .
- July 1st - Südwestfunk opens its first regional studio in Tübingen .
- July 21 - Süddeutsche Rundfunk offers a second radio program.
- August - In Austria, the Alpenland broadcasting group begins broadcasting a second program in the British occupation zone .
- September - In Seoul military transmitter is American Forces Korean Network (AFKN) on the air.
- October - During the October strikes in Austria, the Soviets tried unsuccessfully to influence the news broadcasts on Radio Wien . Those responsible at Ravag refuse to read statements from the strike committees. Meanwhile, Viennese print media bring calls like "Don't believe the RAVAG!"

- The first television attempts since the Second World War began in Germany in 1950 . Nordwestdeutsche Rundfunk was the first to broadcast a test image on July 12, followed by the DFF in the GDR on November 25.
- January 26th - French television (chaîne télévision) broadcasts the first edition of Le Club du jeudi , one of the first children's programs in television history.
- January 27th - The Emmys , which are being awarded for the second time, will award a commercial for the Lucky Strike cigarette brand .
- April 3 - The BBC changes the aspect ratio of the TV picture it broadcasts from 5: 4 to the 4: 3 format that was common until the beginning of the 21st century.
