Radio

  • January: As part of the austerity measures at the British BBC , 13 smaller medium-wave stations that previously carried the BBC Local Radio are switched off .
  • January 1st: Klassik Radio has completely given up broadcasting its program in Hesse and thus also switched off the remaining five frequencies in the Hessian metropolitan areas, after frequencies in rural Hesse had already been switched off. A tender for the frequencies is currently still in progress.
  • January 1st: Without public announcement, the Hessischer Rundfunk has given up two smaller filling stations in Hessen: the 88.5 MHz in Fulda for hr3 (until 2007 Deutschlandfunk ) and the 100.8 MHz in Limburg for hr2 (until 2005 hr-classic ).
  • February 15: After a break of several years, Rockland Radio can be heard again in Bad Kreuznach on the frequency 106.5 MHz. This frequency was used by Deutschlandfunk until 2017 and after the shutdown was assigned to Rockland Radio by the state center for media and communication in Rhineland-Palatinate.
  • March 22nd: domradio has given up broadcasting its program on the 99.2 MHz frequency in Fulda . At the same time, the slot on the Astra satellite was given up. The reasons for this are austerity measures by the Archdiocese of Cologne and a dispute over the cost sharing of the Diocese of Fulda , which was unsuccessful.
  • March 29th: The two masts of the long wave transmitter Aholming were blown up. The Deutschlandfunk program was broadcast from this location on the frequency of 207 kHz up to and including 2014.
  • April 1: As of April 1, 2018, Media Broadcast would like to give up the operation of VHF transmission antennas on transmission masts in Germany and has terminated all contracts for this purpose. However, since it was not possible to find buyers for all transmission antennas in Germany, there was a temporary threat that VHF broadcasting would be switched off on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 in almost all of eastern Germany and in many regions of western Germany. Although this could literally be prevented at the last second, the dispute continues to smolder in the background. The Federal Network Agency is currently examining whether VHF transmission antennas in Germany will require official regulation in the future.
  • April 3: Regular operation with DAB + begins in Vienna.
  • April 9: The Hamburg program alsterradio has ceased broadcasting. The Bavarian program Rock Antenne now broadcasts on the frequency 106.8 MHz with a comparable style of music.
  • August 1st: The harmony.fm program switched off its three frequencies in Eschwege (88.3 MHz), Rotenburg an der Fulda (104.5 MHz) and Idstein (93.2 MHz). The background to this is the ongoing dispute over FM transmitting antennas in Germany.
  • September 28th: Deutschlandradio begins shutting down the first VHF filler stations in favor of DAB + digital radio. For this purpose, both frequencies on Helgoland ( Helgoland transmitter ) were switched off on September 28, and both frequencies in Mittenwald ( Herzogstand transmitter ) on October 5th .
  • November 14: The European Parliament adopts a new version of the European code for electronic communication, which will mean that radio receivers in new cars that will be sold in the EU from 2021 must be digital radio compatible. The EU Council of Ministers has yet to approve the revision of several EU directives that make up the code.
  • December 12th: After a one-year break “due to lack of time and age”, Radio Bremen has taken the broadcast of the news in Latin , the Nuntii Latini , back into its monthly program. Also the Finnish Broadcasting and Vatican News regularly send messages in Latin.
