- January 1 : The BBC Empire Service , the forerunner of the later BBC World Service , offers programs in a non-English language, namely Arabic , for the first time .
- January 16 : On this day, two groundbreaking music recordings are made in Vienna and New York . In Vienna, which is the 9th Symphony of Gustav Mahler by the Vienna Philharmonic under Bruno Walter recorded at New York's Carnegie Hall leads Benny Goodman and his Orchestra the famous Carnegie Hall Concert on (in 1950 from the also a legendary Columbia Records released) Record recording is made.
- March 11th : Hours before the German troops march into Austria, the Austrian Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg , who had been forced to resign by Hitler shortly before, reports on the radio and announces that he is "giving way to violence" and is not ready to shed "German blood".
