- February 28 - In the first broadcast judgment, the Federal Constitutional Court decides against Konrad Adenauer's plan for a private, but federally owned, second nationwide television broadcaster.
- May 15 - In Montreux , Switzerland , the Rose d'Or (“Golden Rose of Montreux”) television award is presented for the first time . The first Rose d'Or received the BBC production The Black and White Minstrel Show .
- June 1st - ARD 2 goes on air on the frequencies of the later ZDF .
- June 6th - The federal states sign a state treaty for a “non-profit” second German television program, the basis for the later ZDF.
- August 25 to September 3 - At the Berlin radio exhibition , the first since the end of the Second World War , Loewe AG presents the Optacord 500 , an early video recorder for the home user market. However, the device is rarely used.

- January 13 - The WDR in Cologne begins broadcasting the 8-part radio play Paul Temple and the Conrad case by Francis Durbridge with René Deltgen , Annemarie Cordes and Kurt Lieckin as the main roles (directed by Eduard Hermann ).
- March 8th - With Radio Nord , Sweden's second commercial radio broadcaster starts. The boat MS Bon Jour , which is moored in international waters, serves as the transmission station .
- July 1st - Radio Ghana begins broadcasting its overseas service which becomes an important propaganda tool for President Kwame Nkrumah and his idea of Pan-Africanism .
- December 31st - The German long-wave transmitter , the predecessor of Deutschlandfunk , is discontinued.

- January 10th - Start of the early evening series Funkstreife Isar 12 on German television .
- January 20 - With the swearing in of John F. Kennedy , an inauguration of a US president is broadcast in color for the first time .
- April - The premises of the Ronacher Variety Theater are used by ORF as a permanent television production facility.
- June 4th - The first edition of the Sportschau can be seen on ARD 2 . As one of the first programs on German-language television, it reports in detail on current sports events.
- September 11th - ORF begins broadcasting a second television channel , initially three days a week .
- October 3 - The CBS airs the first episode of the Dick van Dyke Show .
- October 4th to December 28th - German television broadcasts the 13-part street sweeper Permit in its regional programs for the first time , my name is Cox, based on a novel by Rolf and Alexandra Becker . Directed by John Olden played Günter Pfitzmann and Ellen Schwiers the leading roles.
- November 4th - Rai Due , the second television channel of the public broadcasting company Radiotelevisione Italiana, starts broadcasting .
- November 15th - The broadcast of the one-act play Der Herr Karl by Carl Merz and Helmut Qualtinger on ORF triggers heated debates among the Austrian public. The piece about the life story of an opportunistic fellow traveler, filmed only by a camera without intercuts, also tells the story of Austria from the 1920s to the 1950s.
- December 31st - RTÉ begins broadcasting its first television program for the Republic of Ireland .

- June 30th - Kurt Meister , German actor, director, author and radio play speaker dies at the age of 60. He was best known for directing radio play productions for the NWDR Cologne and its legal successor, the WDR .
