- With Radyo Metropol FM , the first is Turkish-language radio stations in the Federal Republic of Germany was founded.
- March 10th - Start of the Ö1 focus program America - The New World in Pictures of the 19th Century on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name in the Austrian Gallery in the Upper Belvedere .
- March 26 - KXJM, the region's first rhythmic contemporary broadcaster, opens in Portland , Oregon . The station is funded by Seattle-born billionaire entrepreneur Paul Allen .
- March 27th - Ö1 broadcasts a radio night about Andy Warhol . This leads to a short-term, by Wolfgang Kos and Eva Umbauer moderated, reviving the former Ö3 telecast Popmuseum .
- March 31 - Sixty years after its founding, the BBC ceases its German-language service .
- April 5 - After 42 years of running and 15,153 issues, the midday magazine “Auto Drivers” is discontinued.
- June 15 - The last edition of the La Chanson series, which has been running since 1969, is broadcast on Ö1 , moderated by Heinz-Christian Sauer.

- January 3rd - Sat.1 shows the first episode of the youth series Dawson's Creek on German-speaking television.
- January 9 - The animated series Pippi Longstocking celebrates its premiere on ZDFtivi , at Tabaluga tivi .
- January 10 - US pay-TV broadcaster HBO begins broadcasting The Sopranos series . The focus is on Tony Soprano , member of the Mafia and his family.
- Jan. 24 - At the awards ceremony of the 56th Golden Globes Awards , the series The Practice and Ally McBeal excellent.
- February 20 - ProSieben begins the German-language premiere of Alle liebe Raymond .
- March 8th - The comedy show TV hosted by Stefan Raab can be seen totally on ProSieben for the first time .

- January 18th - Günter Strack , German film a. Television actor ( Die Drombuschs , Ein Fall für Zwei , 1981–1988) dies aged 69 in Münchsteinach , Middle Franconia.
- February 1 - Barış Manço , Turkish singer and television presenter, dies in Istanbul at the age of 56 .
- February 12th - Heinz Schubert , German actor dies at the age of 73 in Hamburg. Schubert was best known for the role of the conservative petty bourgeois Alfred Tetzlaff ("Disgust Alfred") in the WDR series Ein Herz und eine Seele .
- March 22 - David Strickland , American actor ( Susan ) dies at the age of 29 in Glen Cove on Long Island .
- May 18 - Hans Mahle , German politician and temporary general manager of the GDR radio station, dies at the age of 87 in Berlin .
- July 28th - Alfons Dalma , Croatian-Austrian journalist, 1967–1974 editor-in-chief of the current service on ORF , dies at the age of 80 in Vienna.
- August 17th - Eberhard Cohrs , German comedian and actor ( a crazy couple , nonstop nonsense ) dies at the age of 78 in Diensdorf-Radlow , Brandenburg.
- September 20 - Willy Millowitsch , German actor and director of the Millowitsch Theater dies at the age of 90 in Cologne . He became known nationwide primarily for the numerous television broadcasts from his theater.
- October 14 - Richard B. Shull , American series actor ( Holmes & Yoyo ) dies in New York at the age of 70 .
