- The 540 meter high Ostankino television tower opens in Moscow . Until 1976 it holds the world record as the tallest structure on earth .
- January 1 - The following the broadcast referendum of 1964 by the People's Party government alone Klaus decided Broadcasting Act comes into force.
- March 9th - Gerd Bacher is appointed general manager of the ORF .
- December - The merger of Desilu Productions and Paramount Pictures creates Paramount Television . Under this umbrella brand, global television series hits such as Happy Days (1974–1984), Taxi (1978–1983) and Cheers (1982–1993) were created in the 1970s and 1980s .
Radio
- April 21 - After the military coup in Greece , pop and rock music temporarily disappears from Greek radio programs and is replaced by military music.
- August 14th - The British pirate broadcaster Wonderful Radio London closes its programs.
- September 30th - BBC Radio 1 starts broadcasting , whose music programming is based on the successful and popular pirate radio stations .
- October 1st - The broadcast reform of the newly appointed ORF general manager Gerd Bacher starts . On this day, the three previous ORF radio chains will be renamed Ö1 (culture, classical music), Ö3 (pop wave) and ÖR (entertainment, regional reporting).
- October 2 - The first edition of the one-hour information program Mittagsjournal can be heard on Ö1 .

- In the broadcast to log the Südwestfunks the SDS chairman Rudi Dutschke guest and answer any questions put by Günter Gaus .
- February 23 - In the US music show American Bandstand be Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever by the Beatles presented by pre-recorded films. The films are considered to be the forerunners of later music videos .
- June 7th - The last episode of the television series about the Hesselbach family from Hesse can be seen on German television under the title Herr Hesselbach und der Ball .
- July 26th - The documentary film Der Polizeistaatsbesuch by Roman Brodmann can be seen on German television in the ARD series “ Zeichen der Zeit ”. It critically deals with the seemingly "trivial" events surrounding Mohammad Reza Pahlavi's visit to Germany in June 1967 .
- August 5th - Start of the 26-part German doctor series Landarzt Dr. Brock in the evening program of the ARD , with Rudolf Prack , Erna Sellmer and Gardy Granass in the leading roles.
- August 25 - On the occasion of the 25th Great German Radio Exhibition , the official go-ahead for color television in the Federal Republic of Germany is given.
- September 10th - The first episode of the western series High Chaparral airs on NBC .
- September 17th - The Doors appear on the Ed Sullivan Show , presenting their song Light My Fire in a live broadcast. Bandleader and singer Jim Morrison does without those changes to the text that the presenter of the show suggested in order to eliminate indications of drug use .
- October 20 - In Germany the first episode of file number XY ... can be seen unsolved . The moderator in the ZDF studio in Wiesbaden is Eduard Zimmermann .
- November 19 - The first episode of the series Till, the boy next door can be seen on ZDF.

- May 27th - Kai Pflaume , German TV presenter, is born in Halle an der Saale .
- May 30th - Therese Lohner , Austrian actress, is born in Basel
- June 27th - Markus Kavka , German TV presenter, music journalist and author is born in Ingolstadt .
- July 1 - Pamela Anderson , Canadian ( Baywatch ) actress and series actress, born in British Columbia .
- November 24 - Thomas Schreiner , German presenter and entertainer, known as "Jumbo Tester" as the ProSieben telecast Galileo is in Munich born.
Died
- January 10th - Erich Neuberg , Austrian theater and television director ( Der Herr Karl , 1961) dies at the age of 38 in Vienna .
- January 13th - Friedl Münzer , Austrian actress and radio play speaker, dies at the age of 74 in her adopted home Cologne .
- April 12th - Alfons Übelhör , Austrian public educator and radio director of ORF from 1958 to 1967, dies at the age of 61 in Vienna.
