- AEG -Telefunken introduces the optical disc . Due to its high sensitivity and short playing time of just 10 minutes, the system disappeared from the market in the mid-1970s.
- September 7th - The news magazine profil , founded by Oscar Bronner , appears in Vienna for the first time.

- The satirical alpine interviews by cabaret artist and folk actor Otto Grünmandl can be heard for the first time on Ö3 .

- January 1st - SWF1 begins broadcasting the youth and music series Pop Shop .
- July 11th - Start of the American Top 40 hit parade moderated by Casey Kasem .

- Jan 3 - Jon Pertwee first appeared as the time traveler "Doctor" on the BBC series Doctor Who . Pertwee is the third actor in this role after William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton .
- January 4th - local time , the forerunner of the ZDF foreign journal celebrates its premiere on television.
- January 5th - Start of the ABC series All My Children .
- February 23 - The US cartoon series Die Jetsons starts on the regional programs of ARD .
- April 16 - 47th and last edition of the show forget-me-not in favor of the problem child campaign on ZDF with Peter Frankenfeld .
- April - The Turkish TV broadcaster TRT starts operations in full. These are the first television programs to be made available to a wider audience in Turkey, as television sets are often barely affordable luxury items. Even metropolitan areas like İzmir and Istanbul remained unsupervised until well into the 1970s.
- May 14th - The first German television station cancels the broadcast of the television game Bambule by Ulrike Meinhof , scheduled for May 24th , because of the participation of its author in the liberation of Baader .
- July 31st - Start of the US series Twen-Police in the joint program of ARD (German television).
- August 10 - ZDF takes over the US cartoon series Mein Name ist Hase ( The Bugs Bunny Show ).
- September 19 - The first episode of the critical sitcom Mary Tyler Moore airs on CBS .
- October 5th - Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) starts broadcasting.
- October 18th - The television film Das Millionenspiel is broadcast on German television. This pseudo-documentary production about a manhunt show is used by some viewers as an opportunity to register by telephone as a candidate in the role of the hunted or as a hunter.
- November 27th - ZDF takes over the series from Canada, Adventure in the Rainbow .
- November 29th - Start of the ARD crime series Tatort on German television. Walter Richter can be seen as Chief Inspector Paul Trimmel in the first episode , produced by NDR , entitled Taxi to Leipzig .

- March 10th - Fritz Benscher , German actor and quiz master (including tick-tack quiz ) dies at the age of 65 in Munich .
- March 25th - Hans Mahler , German actor, radio play speaker, theater director and director, dies in Hamburg at the age of 69 . He was best known for the numerous television broadcasts from the Hamburg Ohnsorg Theater.
- April 30th - Inger Stevens , Swedish-American actress ( Twilight Zone , 1960) dies in Hollywood at the age of 35 .
